Glenn Scott to grid up at WSBK opener
The provisional entry list for the 2015 Superbike World Championship announced overnight, sees a tantalising mix of proven race winners, experienced campaigners and exciting new talent, set to launch their seasons in just three weeks at the opening Phillip Island Swann round from February 20-22.
And in world supersport, Australia will enjoy a permanent presence with New South Welshman Glenn Scott set to campaign a Honda under the AARK Racing banner.
The chance to compete within the World Supersport Championship was one that Scott leaped at, and admits that competing against the rest of the World will be the opportunity for him to fulfil one of his lifelong dreams since starting on two wheels. Glenn does however remain mindful of the intense challenge that will be associated with racing alongside the globe’s best riders.
“This is a massive opportunity that Andy from AARK Racing has put in front of me and I can’t thank him enough, I can’t wait to get started. To think I’ll be lining up on the world stage is a dream come true and I honestly can’t wait to get on the Honda CBR600 at the Island. I’m glad the season starts in Phillip Island at a track I know as the calendar goes to many new circuits for me.”
“It’s going to be tough but that’s what to expect on the world stage. I have a lot of experience now after many years of racing and I feel this opportunity has come at the perfect time. I raced a 600cc Supersport bike here in Australia for a few years, so it won’t be completely foreign to me and after riding a 1000cc Superbike for the last few years I’ll be used to the speed of a World Supersport Championship bike,” Scott said.
Ahead of the opening round of the World Supersport Championship, Glenn will take part in a two day test in an effort to become accustomed to his new bike and develop critical relationships within the AARK Racing team to ensure he can capitalise and move forward from the outset of opening practice at the event.
“I’ll first ride the AARK Racing World Supersport bike at Phillip Island at a test a week before the event. A couple of days testing will be a massive help for me to get comfortable with the bike and team and help find a setting for the race.”
“At this stage I am fully committed to the season and looking at contesting a select few Australasian Superbike Championship rounds to keep on a bike when I’m back here in Australia. I’m really grabbing this opportunity with both hands and going to give it everything I’ve got to succeed,” Scott added.
Team Principal at AARK Racing, Andrew Offer is excited at the opportunity of having Glenn as part of the teams attack on the World Supersport Championship, highlighting that his experience and recent results at the top level of Australian racing should place him in a strong position entering into the series.
“AARK Racing is pleased to confirm that Glenn Scott has agreed to terms to ride the AARK Racing Honda CBR600RR for the 13 rounds of the 2015 World Supersport Championship. AARK Racing contacted Glenn at the end of 2014 to see if he was interested in entering the Championship. Although Glenn expressed a desire to compete in the World Championship, he felt that he was unable to get the funding involved.”
“We have now agreed to the new terms for the season and he has committed fully to the Championship. We at AARK Racing feel that this is a great result for us, to be able to obtain the services of the rider we were seeking initially, and getting Glenn to commit to the full season. Glenn has shown that he is able to run with front running riders of the Superbike class in Australia and we feel that with this experience he will be able to run with the World Supersport riders if we at AARK Racing can supply him with the equipment he needs,” Offer said.
Twenty-six riders from nine different countries have been named on the WSBK entry list, spread across eight different manufacturers: Aprilia, BMW Motorrad, Ducati, EBR, Kawasaki, Honda, MV Agusta and Suzuki. Leading the charge will be current world champion Sylvain Guintoli, but he’ll be defending his No. 1 plate on a Pata Honda after leaving Aprilia at the end of his stellar 2014 season.
The man the UK-based Guintoli overran in the final round of 2014, Tom Sykes, remains under the factory Kawasaki Racing Team awning in 2015, but now alongside a new teammate in the form of fellow Briton Jonathan Rea.
Combined, Sykes and Rea have 38 world superbike victories to their name, and undoubtedly shape as the most potent combination in 2015. A recent two-day test at Jerez in Spain only confirmed that, with Sykes and Rea second and third on the timesheets behind Aruba.it Racing Ducati’s Davide Giugliano.
Giugliano’s teammate Chaz Davies was fourth ahead of Leon Haslam (Aprilia Racing Red Devils) and Alex Lowes (Crescent Suzuki) – the redoubtable Briton set to be one of the big improvers in 2015 with a year of intense WSBK competition now under his belt.
It wasn’t the best of outings at Jerez for Guintoli however, who crashed early on day one and suffered ankle and shoulder injuries, but he’ll be okay to begin his defence at Phillip Island on February 22. In 2014 Guintoli shared wins at Phillip Island with former Suzuki rider Eugene Laverty.
Meanwhile, Giugliano looks to be in strong form ahead of the Aussie opener, and he should be one of the big improvers in 2015 alongside former British superbike champion, Lowes.
“We’ve been able to test a lot of small things calmly and methodically,” Giugliano said after setting the fastest time at Jerez. “I’m really pleased that, together with the team, I’ve been able to find good feeling with the bike, something that I hope remains unchanged in the next tests that we’ll carry out at Phillip Island before the races. We’ll continue to work however, so as to be as prepared as possible for the opening races.”
Meanwhile, like Guintoli and Rea, Haslam is joining a new team in 2015, and his teammate will be former Moto2 rider Jordi Torres. The Spaniard is among a number of rookies joining the production-based series for the first time, alongside reigning world supersport champion Michael van der Mark (Pata Honda), Frenchman Randy de Puniet (Crescent Suzuki), Nico Terol (Althea Ducati), and veteran American Larry Pegram (Hero EBR).
De Puniet and van der Mark shape as the sharpest of the new brigade, with the former an ex-Moto GP rider and van der Mark has a victory in the Suzuka 8-Hour to his name on the same capacity Honda he’ll race in 2015. Van der Mark was the fastest of the rookies at Jerez.
Pegram is one half of a new two-rider team for EBR, with impressive Italian Niccolo Canepa joining him as the American marque looks to make a quantum leap in competitiveness this year. Canepa set some reasonable lap times at Jerez testing, which will buoy the team ahead of the next official test session at Phillip Island on February 16-17 ahead of the season opener.
Other experienced riders on the grid in 2015 include David Salom (Pedercini Kawasaki), Leon Camier (MV Agusta Reparto Corse), Sylvain Barrier (BMW Motorrad Italia), and the pairing of Toni Elias and Ayrton Badovini under the all-new JR Racing Team banner which will campaign the new BMW S 1000 RR from round two in Thailand.
Aprilia, Ducati and MV Agusta have also updated their hardware in 2015, as the entire grid races under standardised rules which will combine Superbike class chassis with Superstock-spec engines.
In world supersport, 24 riders will be on the grid full-time in 2015, with Scott to make his championship debut in front of his home crowd at Phillip Island. Scott, from Mangrove Mountain on the NSW central coast, joins the world scene from domestic racing in Australia, where he was one of the leading privateers in the 2014 Australasian Superbike Championship.
The 2015 supersport title is set to be fought out by MV Agusta teammates Jules Cluzel and Lorenzo Zanetti, three-time champion Kenan Sofuoglu (Kawasaki Puccetti Racing), Roberto Rolfo (Lorini Honda) and American PJ Jacobsen (Kawasaki Intermoto Ponyexpres), while young Briton Kyle Smith has taken over van der Mark’s vacated world championship seat at Pata Honda.
At Phillip Island, three local riders will compete as wildcards in world supersport – Aiden Wagner, Tim Boujos and Sam Lambert (subj to medical clearance) – as well as two in world superbike: Jed Metcher and Matthew Walters.
