— Waters, Cachia and Lamont win Monster Energy MX Nationals at Horsham
Motul Pirelli Suzuki claimed a dream 1-2 finish in Horsham’s seventh round of the 2012 Monster Energy MX Nationals, Australian Motocross Championship, in Victoria on Sunday, headed by title contender Todd Waters.
The 21-year-old was again in fine form as the series returned to Horsham for the first time since 2010, claiming the overall victory with the win in race one before he sealed the deal with a third in moto two and second in the final moto.
Waters led much of the final moto before coming under attack from CDR Yamaha’s MX1 series leader Josh Coppins, and the gap between them in the title chase now sits at a slim eight-point margin.
“I was a little bit disappointed Josh came past in that final moto, but I’ve got to hand it to him,” Waters said. “I couldn’t quite hold him off, but anyway that’s how it goes and the track was tough. To come away from today on top of the podium shows the work is starting to pay off, so I’m just stoked and it’s a great day for Motul Pirelli Suzuki.”
Behind Waters overall in second place for the weekend was teammate Cody Cooper, who tied on points with Waters, but was credited the runner-up position overall due to Waters’ higher placing in the final moto.
Cooper finally pieced an entire round together with a trio of strong results, the highlight being a win in the second moto. Cooper also claimed second in moto one and concluded the round with a third in the final moto.
Coppins maintained his series lead with a fighting third overall, proving once again that the gruelling 30-minute moto is where he shines. Coppins was third in moto one and fourth in moto two, before battling to the win in the final moto.
British champion Brad Anderson was fourth for the round for Carlton Dry Honda Thor Racing, while round six winner Lawson Bopping completed the top five for CDR Yamaha.
Defending champion Jay Marmont returned to racing for Monster Energy Kawasaki at Horsham, racing to a consistent effort and taking out sixth overall for the weekend.
The Motul MX2 ranks were taken out by JDR/KTM Factory Racing rider Josh Cachia, who picked up his second overall win of the season. Cachia dominated the round with second in the opening moto before claiming wins in the final pair of motos.
“It was really good to show my speed and get another win here this weekend,” Cachia said. “This is motocross; the track was rough, rutted, sticky and just gnarly out there after the rain. I couldn’t have done it without my whole team, so thank you to JDR/KTM Factory Racing. Hopefully we can keep winning races.”
Behind Cachia overall was rejuvenated Victorian Adam Monea for Zero Seven Motorsports Suzuki, salvaging his podium despite two major falls in the final moto. Monea’s day started with a win in moto one, before he rounded out the weekend with second and fifth positions respectively.
Carlton Dry Honda Thor Racing’s Ford Dale closed in on the series lead by the slightest of margins with third overall, now 36 points behind runaway series leader Luke Styke on the Serco Yamaha Metal Mulisha Racing YZ250F.
Styke was forced to settle for fifth overall in Horsham, trailing Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Kade Mosig. Cachia’s teammate Brenden Harrison returned to racing and put forward a positive performance, claiming sixth for the round.
In the Pirelli MXD ranks it was Kiwi Kayne Lamont who scored his fourth consecutive win for KTM. Lamont won the opening two motos of the round, before clinching the overall with a third in the final moto of the weekend.
“I’m really happy to win the round and extend my lead in the series,” Lamont said. “I really need to thank everybody who has helped me, my sponsors and my family for their support. The club did a really good job of the track considering the conditions, so it was a good weekend for me.”
It was a KTM sweep of the podium for the second round in a row, with Dylan Leary second and Choice Motorsports KTM’s Dylan Long third after taking the win in moto three. Lamont’s round win sees him extend his series lead to a healthy 29 points.

A third place finish at Round 7 of the Monster Energy MX Nationals at Horsham today has seen Carlton Dry Honda Thor Racing’s Ford Dale make up valuable ground in the MX2 championship chase, while teammate Brad Anderson took fourth overall in the MX 1 class.
Dale qualified second and got a good start in the opening 7-lap race to sit third by mid race distance. While forging to mount a challenge for second, Dale washed out and slipped off track, dropping a number of positions before working his way up into fifth by the race end.
In the second sprint race Dale was sitting comfortably second but a mistake on the penultimate lap of the race saw him lose a spot to finish third.
The Honda rider didn’t get the best start in the final moto but made steady progress throughout the race as he worked through the order to finish second and claim the third step of the podium.
“I felt like I raced well today,” Dale stated. “The track was really wet but the bike was awesome and the whole team worked really hard.
“While I didn’t get a good start in the final race I raced hard and came through to finish second.
“It was a good result today, we have come away with a podium finish and gained 12 points in the title chase,” Dale said.
Dale retains second place in the MX2 championship standings and has gained 12 points on championship leader Luke Styke.
Brad Anderson endured a frustrating day in the MX1 class, the Carlton Dry Honda Thor Racing rider qualified first but a small off in the opening moto saw him take the chequered flag fifth.
He finished second in Race 2 but was forced to come back from dead last in the final 30 minute moto, after a crashing while challenging for second place on the opening lap.
Anderson worked his way up the order to finish sixth and acknowledged he pushed too hard to try and get to the front in the early stages of today’s races.
“The bike was great and the track was pretty good and technical, I just made some mistakes and endured a bit of bad luck trying to get to the front,” Anderson said.
“I pushed too hard to get to the front early in the races, I need to back it off slightly and be a little more patient.
“On a positive note my arm-pump was a lot better today, while it hasn’t gone completely it was nowhere near as bad as normal,” Anderson added.
With three rounds remaining Anderson sits third in the MX2 championship standings on 380 points.
The next event on the 2012 Monster Energy MX Nationals calendar will see the Carlton Dry Honda Thor Racing Team travel to Appin in NSW on Sunday 29th July.

Serco Yamaha Metal Mulisha Racing’s Luke Styke endured a rare tough day at the office to finish fifth on the day at round seven of the MX Nationals at Horsham, Victoria, but still holds a healthy 36 point lead in the MX2 championship.
Styke didn’t have the mojo flowing and struggled to get a good qualifying lap down. That carried over to racing where the New South Welshman battled gainfully but wasn’t able to pick off race wins as he had a previous rounds.
His 7-6-4 results did prove to be smart racing and well thought out championship damage control as he continued to gain points and keep his championship lead intact.
I didn’t feel good on the bike all weekend. Looking back, I was probably trying to override the track in qualifying and it just wasn’t working for me. But, as a team we come up with a plan to not do anything stupid, not ride over my head and get as points as I can.
“We were able to do that so considering how I rode, the points damage was okay and we can start fresh at the Appin round which is almost like a home track for me,” Styke explains.
The hard luck season for team mate Kirk Gibbs continued as he went down heavily in race two and was hit or ran over by several bikes. He battled to the finish in obvious pain but elected not to compete in the final moto as he was bruised and batted from the fall.
“I’m just disappointed,” Gibbs laments. “I have been putting in a huge amount of work with my training and fitness during the week but at the moment it’s just not showing up on the weekends. I’m not really sure how the crash happened in moto two other than it was in the first turn and a few of us ended up on the ground and I got hit a few times.”
“Nothing is broken but I’m sore at the moment. I will get everything checked out when I get home and come back fresh for Appin.
The Serco duo now sits in first and seventh in the championship with three rounds remaining.

Cachia and Lamont claim victories for KTM at Horsham MX Nationals
Factory Racing rider Josh Cachia raced to his second MX Nationals, Australian Motocross Championship, round win of the season in the MX2 category at Horsham in Victoria on Sunday, 15 July.
Cachia added the Horsham round win to his prior overall at Murray Bridge earlier this season, proving that he and the KTM 250 SX-F are consistent contenders for the 2012 title chase.
The 20-year-old from Carpenter Rocks dominated the round with second in the opening moto before claiming two convincing wins in the final pair of motos.
“It was really good to show my speed and get another win here this weekend,” Cachia said. “This is motocross; the track was rough, rutted, sticky and just gnarly out there after the rain. I couldn’t have done it without my whole team, so thank you to JDR/KTM Factory Racing. Hopefully we can keep winning races.”
Following his success in Horsham, Cachia maintains fourth in the championship, but closed to within 53 points of the championship leader with three rounds left to run.
Cachia was joined by JDR/KTM Factory Racing teammate Brenden Harrison at Horsham for the first time this season, returning from pre-season surgery that saw him forced out of the season’s first half.
Harrison was sixth overall in a promising performance, logging 3-12-6 finishes in the trio of MX2 motos. Another KTM rider to finish inside the top 10 was MX2 debutant Joel Milesevic, stepping up from the MXD class on his KTM 250 SX.
JDR/KTM Factory Racing MX1 contender Dan Reardon finished 10th overall on Sunday on the 450 SX-F, with 11-10-11 results during the round. Reardon’s remains ninth in the championship.
