WA MX 2013 – Round Five

Perth’s most picturesque motorcross circuit lays in the hills about and hours’ drive from the city. On Sunday it was the playground for riders vying for a chance at a state Championship when round five of the 2013 WAMX Smarter Than Smoking State Championships hit the hard packed circuit on Sunday.
Stevie Heilers used his local home track advantage to take the round win in the Pro Open/MX1 whilst Josh Adams kept his championship winning lead in the Pro Lites/MX 2 as the Quad Championship was taken out by Anthony Pearce and in the Women’s championship Jessica Moore took out consecutive titles.
Pro Open/MX1
A muddy and very tough sloppy track and a thick blanket of fog made practice a case of staying on the bike and keeping the throttle open. Conditions improved as the sun broke through and blanketed the day, making the track grippy and extremely fast. Stevie Heilers took the top step of the podium marking his first overall Pro Open victory of the 2013 season.
The Mini Diggers Demolition/MotoXFit, Stay Strong Clothing rider finished with1-1-2 results at Noble Falls across the three motos contested on race day.
Heilers came into the round in second position after a standout year, overshadowed somewhat by series leader Louis Calvin. Using his home track as a clear advantage Heilers was dominant in motos one and two taking the wins and finishing second to Louis Calvin in the last moto.
“It’s really good to win, especially in front of my friends and sponsors. After the bad luck I’ve had, in the last couple of seasons with injury,” Heilers said. “Today was great, I had good balance and that was a key. The track was hard and got better as the day went on, I’m happy to win.”
Finishing behind Heilers and missing out on the overall by just five points was series leader Louis Calvin who came into this round as the firm favourite. The Mandurah City KTM mounted Calvin, took 2-3-1 results for the round, and still maintains his stellar season. “ I just could not get my starts dialled in today for the first two motos, but managed to put it all together for the last moto” said Louis Calvin, “We are just one round away from trying to seal this Pro Open championship, and that’s where my focus is I said at the start I wanted this season, and its all in my court now”.
KTM/Herb Watson Racing rider Josh Adams who went 3-2-4 today picked up third step on the podium, “it was a tough day I went to make the pass on Kyle (Webster) in that last moto for third place and lost it in the bowl, that didn’t help my chances but I’m happy with the third place today and I am still in fourth in the championships
Completing the top five were Five Star Yamaha’s Craig Bolton and Wellard/CLAAS/Cully’s Yamaha Kyle Webster. Calvin now leads the series by seventy points from Heilers, with Kyle Webster, Josh Adams and Paul Humbertson in fifth in the championships after five of six rounds to be contested this year.
Pro Lite/MX 2
The Pro Lites/MX2 category was again tightly contested with Josh Adams taking the round win ahead of Kyle Webster and David Birch. Adams used consistency to win with 1-2-1 results for the round, and now sits atop the leader board by 8 points over Kyle Webster and 39 points ahead of Robbo Lovett in third place in the championship.
“It’s been a good day for the Herb Watson team and I to come away with the win,” Josh Adams beamed. “We want to keep moving forward from here, there’s still three motos left in this championship. My starts are getting a lot better so we’ll keep chasing the championship – it’s definitely not over.”
Second overall for the round was Kyle Webster on the Wellard/CLAAS/Cully’s Yamaha (2-1-2) with a win in moto two, while David Birch picked up third for the day as a result of his (3-3-3) performance on board the TRS Racing KTM. Five Star Yamaha’s Craig Bolton worked tirelessly all day and picked up fourth, with Jayden Rykers fifth for the round on the Mandurah City KTM.
Womens Championship
It was back to back Women’s Championship for Ray Moore Motorcycles entry of Jess Moore who took the clean sweep of all three motos to take the round win and seal the deal on another Women’s State Championship, whilst Wellard/CLAAS/Yamaha’s Shelley Connor (2-2-2) battled with Fifth Element Kawasaki’s Chelsea Blakers (4-3-3), Fluent MX’s Storme Green and Newman Motorcyles/Savannah Engineers Teleisha Outram. This is also how they finished in the title chase, with Jess Moore 44 points clear of second placed Shelley Connor.
Jess Moore: “A big thanks to all the girls fro the competiton this season and to all my friends and family who support me and the sponsors who help me get here on the podium”.
Shelley Connor was delighted with her results, “Jess is a benchmark for any of us riders, and Chelsea (Blakers) had me on my toes, I am stoked to be runner up this year and thank all the girls for some great racing, and my family and the Wellard/CLAAS/Yamaha team and Peter Strickland”.
Quad Championship
In his rookie year in the Quad Championship, Anthony Pearce took the Savage Suzuki to his first ever championship, capping off a wonderful season. Pearce (1-2-2) took the round win from Chris Bosnakis in his debut season in senior racing (6-1-1) and Shaun Woodhead (3-3-3). These results were mirrored in the championship standings with Anthony Pearce taking his first championship by 15 points over Chris Bosnakis, in another season of tightly contested motos.
In the Clubman Quads the round results had Zac Zafrimoski (2-1-1)for the top step of the podium with Daniel Soltoggio second overall (1-2-2) and Brendon Reynolds (3-3-4) in third position. The Clubman Quad championship series was won by Daniel Soltoggio 44 points ahead of Brendon Reynolds and Zac Safrimoski who finished third.

The Grand Finale will come down to the wire at Round 6 on September 15th, at AJS, Wanneroo Park.
