After last weekend’s racing Josh Strang, Matthew Phillips and Chris Holder are sitting at the pointy end of their respective championships. Strang won round eight of the GNCC held in New York last weekend and now holds a one point lead in the series while Phillips leads the World Enduro GP Championships after two hard fought days of racing in Finland and Holder is tied with defending champion Tai Woffinden in the Speedway World Championships after round three was held in Denmark last weekend – see the full results and report below.

CD12 a HUGE Success
While I was working my arse off at the Brisbane Caravan and Camping Show the rest of the dirt biking enthusiasts from yesteryear were enjoying CD12 held at the iconic Conondale motocross facility on the Sunshine Coast.
Not only did I miss a track groomed within an inch of its life and belting laps with all of my old mates and I also missed out on meeting Heikki Mikkola and Broc Glover, two riders I greatly admire and followed religiously throughout their racing careers (I still watch Glover’s USGP exploits at Carlsbad).
Like everything this year in motocross, the event coincided with the 60th anniversary of Yamaha’s involvement in motorsport and from all reports Yamaha put on a sensational display and as pem usual there were a plethora of some of best looking old jiggas around the pits. Well done to all involved, the only thing you messed up was the date :^).

Australian Supercross Championship Schedule
The 2016 Australian Supercross Championship schedule has been released ad the series will begin at Jimboomba (West of Brisbane) on 17 September before remaining in Queensland for round two in Toowoomba on 14 October under SB Promotions.
The series will then turn its attention to Wayville in South Australia on 29 October, operated by Gilbert Racing, the same group will also be hosting round four at Avalon in Victoria on 5 November.
Capping off the series will be AME Management’s international AUS-X Open event in Sydney on 12-13 November, as both events become official Australian Supercross Championship rounds this year to round out the season.

WAMX Junior Motocross Championship – Round 2 – The Beverley and Districts Motorcycle Club
The Beverley and Districts Motorcycle Club hosted the second round of the WAMX Junior Motocross Championship last weekend and it was Kayden Minear who took out the 50cc Auto class while Seth Clark pipped Minear in the 65cc 7-10 Years class and as expected ‘red hot’ Myles Gilmore extended his championship lead in the 65cc 10-12 Years and 85/150cc 9-12 Years classes.
Brady Gilmore won the 85/150cc 12-16 Years class while Corben Weinert narrowly won the 100cc-125cc 13-15 Years class before Mitch Outram and Mat Fabry took out the 100cc-125cc 15 Years and 128cc-150cc/250cc 13-16 Years classes respectively.
Nichole Mc Donnell, Josh McQuade and Jae Dowsett won the three quad classes that were in action on the day and all of the above and their rivals will be back racing for round three at Coastal Park on Sunday July 3rd.

Dungey OUT!!
This is a bummer – Ryan Dungey has sustained a cracked vertebrae when he crashed while battling for the lead on the opening lap of the second moto at Thunder Valley MX two weekend’s ago. Dungey actually bounced back from the crash and rode a from 19th place back to 4th spot by the races end to finish 2nd overall for the round but after feeling uncomfortable Dungey was evaluated by several doctors and the results have confirmed that Dungey cracked his C6 Vertebrae in the fall and requires a minimum of 6-8 weeks healing time.
“It’s very difficult to share such disappointing news,” said Ryan Dungey. “It’s heart breaking mainly because of all the hard work the team and I have put in preparing to defend the motocross title this year. But I’m very thankful that the injury wasn’t worse. I will use this time away from racing to recover fully, knowing this will only make me stronger and more motivated. Thank you everyone for your support and understanding.”
Red Bull Straight Rhythm
Red Bull Straight Rhythm returns to Fairplex in Pomona on October 22 and this year’s event will feature the same head-to-head format as the top riders face off down a 1/2 mile straight rhythm section with no turns, but this time the full event will all take place on a single day. Starting at 1pm, fans will be able to watch practice, qualifying and the finals, which will take place under the lights.

British Motocross Championship – Round 4 – Desertmartin, Northern Ireland
Adam Sterry and Jake Nicholls have won the MX2 and MX1 classes respectively at round four of the Maxxis British Motocross Championships held at the former GP circuit of Desertmartin in Northern Ireland last weekend.
Sterry scored 1-1 results to win ahead of Bryan Mackenzie and Steven Clarke while Nicholls scored 1-3 results to take the overall ahead of Brad Anderson and Shaun Simpson. For the second round in a row Tommy Searle crashed hard in the opening moto then bounced back to win the second moto.
Dutch Masters of Motocross – Markelo
Evgeny Bobryshev has won the MX1 overall at the latest round of the Dutch Motocross Championship with 1-1 results ahead of Glenn Coldenhoff who went 2-2 and Damon Graulus who went 5-3. As expected Jeffrey Herlings won the MX2 class while Max Anstie was second with 2-2 results and Thomas Covington third with 3-4 scores.
Bou Wins Andorra Trials GP
Defending World Trials Champion Toni Bou continued his winning streak by dominating both days of competition at the Andorra Grand Prix and is now 17 points ahead of Adam Raga in the championship.
“I’m very happy for this perfect weekend. I wanted to win here after the trial last year. To have clinched the win both days is very positive. Yesterday the sections were very tricky, but today in the dry, I picked up far less marks. It’s been a very positive weekend for the championship.”

AMSOIL Grand National Cross Country – Round 8 – Odessa, New York
Round eight of the Grand National Cross Country (GNCC) continued last weekend with the Second Annual Dunlop Tomahawk GNCC and the rivalry between Josh Strang and Kalaib Russell reached new heights with the two hard charging competitors slamming into each other on the final lap giving Strang the win and leaving Russell on the side of the track with a broken KTM.
Cory Buttrick grabbed the holeshot but it wouldn’t take long for Strang to take the lead as they entered the woods while Russell and Jordan Ashburn both struggled to get off the start and were buried toward the back of the pack.
Russell slowly started reeling in Strang around the halfway point of the race where he was only fifteen seconds behind, well ahead of the battle between Grant Baylor and Ashburn for the last podium position and Baylor was able to hold the position once lapped riders came between them.
Once the white flag came out it was an all-out battle for the lead with Russell working his way around Strang but the Aussie stayed on the rear fender of Russell until they came across lapped riders where Russell went one side and Strang went the other but their different lines had to come together eventually and the two riders hit with such force that both slammed into the surrounding trees.
Strang was able to quickly recover while Russell faced a mechanical issue which left the defending champion unable to finish the race.
“I got off to a quick lead and I think the dust helped me get a gap,” said Strang. “Kailub started to catch me on the last two laps and then was right on me on the last lap. Around the six mile marker we had different lines and he came up next to me and we rubbed and I backed off and he passed me. Then about a half mile later the same opportunity came up where I was able to get up next to him and we both came together and got tangled. He hit a tree and then I hit the next tree in line. I’m not a dirty rider but that’s racing. We both want to win, and it’s unfortunate that it had to be this way.”
Russell posted this on his Instagram: ‘Worked my a@@ today to run Strang down. Mad the pass about halfway through the last lap. Ended up having to take a wide line due to a laper and the next thing I see is Strang’s front wheel and very unceremoniously smashed into a tree. The impact on my bike was enough to cause my fuel pump located in my gas tank to break a plastic fitting in half. In hindsight I am not mad about the overly aggressive move. I would have done the same thing in his shoes. Just really pissed that the move caused a DNF.’
In the XC2 Pro Lites division Craig Delong grabbed yet another holeshot with his teammate Layne Michael right behind him. The lead position continued to be exchanged between Michael, Delong and Jesse Groemm. However, Trevor Bollinger had to work his way through nearly the entire class to take home his sixth win of the season. Groemm and Michael crossed the line in second and third, and Delong would finish just off the podium in fourth.
“I had to kick my bike seven times on the start before it would start,” said Bollinger. “It was tough to make up that much time. The woods were good, but the fields were super dusty. You just had to be smart on the first few laps. Once I got with Craig we were rolling pretty well and eventually I was able to bring it on in.”
The 2016 AMSOIL Grand National Cross Country Series continues with round nine on June 25 and 26 with the popular AMSOIL Snowshoe GNCC held at Snowshoe Mountain Resort in West Virginia.

World Enduro GP Championship – Round 4 – Finland
Eero Remes (TM) and Matt Phillips (Sherco) are showing that they are two riders to beat after round four of the World Enduro GP Championship was held in Finland last weekend.
Remes won the day one over Steve Holcombe, Nathan Watson and Phillips but on day two Phillips found his spark and won by 9 seconds over Remes and Watson and now leads the series, tied with Remes on 125 points, well clear of third placed Holcombe who is on 98 points.
“I was feeling a little stiff in the morning,” explained Remes after day 2. “The enduro test was really difficult so it was hard to find the good rhythm. Nathan was fast so I hard to push hard during the final lap.”
“Remes and Watson were pushing me hard for the overall win, which helped me get ahead in the Enduro 2 class.” Phillips commented. “The day was difficult but I just kept pushing and pushing. It was a great day, a really good way to finish the GP of Finland.”
The EnduroGP series now heads to Sweden, where round five of the 2016 championship will take place in Enkoping.

FIM Speedway Grand Prix – Round 3 – Denmark
Danish FIM Speedway Grand Prix winner Maciej Janowski held off a ferocious challenge from Aussie Chris Holder to top the rostrum with defending champion Tai Woffinden bagging third place to now be on top of the FIM Speedway World Championship, level on 39 points with Holder and just point ahead of living legend Greg Hancock..
“It was amazing. When you hear your national anthem for you, it is a very good feeling. But it’s only the third SGP.” Janowski said. “There is still a lot to do and a lot of work for us. My team worked really well on Saturday and on Friday. We stayed focused all night. I made some small changes and that was it. I did my best and it was enough. I am so happy.
Holder was delighted to reach a third final in as many rounds. Despite managing just a point from his opening two outings, he ended the night in style. “I wasn’t looking really good in the first two heats, but we made a change with the bike and it worked well.” Holder commented. “I can’t complain about getting a few points and getting on the podium after a really bad start. I managed to get past Magic in the final and he passed me back. We had a good little battle, but he got the better of me there at the end. It’s only the third round, but I’m still up there and amongst it, which is good.”
“Leading the championship after round three doesn’t really mean anything. It’s cool but it doesn’t matter who’s leading it now; it matters who’s leading it after the final round.” said Woffinden
Next up for the FIM Speedway Grand Prix stars is the Mitas Czech Republic SGP at Prague’s Marketa Stadium and Woffinden has won the last three Prague events. “I wonder if I can do it again,” he smiled. “It’s going to be tough, and you can see from the championship that it’s so close; long may it continue.

Canadian Motocross Championships – Round 2 – The Wastelands, Nanaimo, British Columbia
Round two of the Rockstar Energy Drink Motocross Nationals was held in British Columbia last weekend and it was local heroes Colton Facciotti and Cole Thompson who took out the MX1 and MX2 overalls respectively.
MX1
Davi Millsaps led all but one lap of both motos after getting good starts and making aggressive passes early in both races but the KTM pilot was penalized 10 positions in the first moto after video evidence showed him jumping on a Red Cross flag.
Matt Goerke suffered the same fate after finishing third in the first moto. Goerke ended up 13-4 on the day, which put him in sixth overall. Millsaps was on fire today and was clearly the fastest man on the track. With the penalty Davi finished 11-1, for fourth overall, and was very gracious on the podium after the second moto where he apologized for missing the flag.
Facciotti ended up on top of the podium after finishing 2-2 on the day and leaves Nanaimo with the series lead and the red plate on his bike, and is in a good position as we head east to win his fifth national title.
Mike Allesi rode well this weekend, and after Goerke made a mistake on the last lap of Moto 1, passed him to finish second. Mike ended up being declared the winner of Moto 1 after the penalties, and went on to finish fifth in Moto 2, for second overall. Allesi is sitting third in the standings and is only 12 points back of the series leader.
Grabbing both holeshots this weekend was Brett Metcalfe, who’s 3-3 moto finishes were good enough for third overall. Metcalfe admitted after the race that the Wastelands track is not one of his favourites and was happy with his third place finish. “I was surprised to grab two Holeshots,” Metty said on the podium after the race.

Cole Thompson got off to a great start in Moto 1 and ran behind newcomer Mark Worth, who is filling in for the injured Jacob Hayes. Cole made a clean, aggressive, inside pass by Worth on lap 7 and never looked back. “The track was a little slick for the first few laps, so I waited to make the pass,” said a confident Thompson after the first moto. “Tommy Gun” took the holeshot in Moto 2 and checked out, finishing 20 seconds ahead of the field by the end of the moto.
On the podium after his 1-1 finish, Cole said, “There is something with me and Nanaimo; going 3 for 4 in moto wins, and overalls for the last two years in different classes.”

Finke Desert Race – Alice to Finke to Alice
Living Legend Toby Price was the star billing for the 2016 Finke Desert Race and the KTM factory rider did not disappoint with the fastest ever time over the two day event to take the overall win in the bike class before doing the almost impossible and earning a more than credible second outright in the car class.
Behind Price there were thousands of stories of incredible efforts over the 452km ‘there and back’ course with some of the most notables being:
- Former motocross champion Tye Simmonds is learning this ‘off-road’ gig real fast and after missing a few corners on day one bounced back to be right on Price’s pace on day 2 – this kid is the real deal and will win this event in the future.
- Jack Simpson had his first crack at the Finke and won the 250cc Four Stroke Class and ended up in 11th outright – like Simmonds, Jack is a former motocrosser who is looking at making his way in the Off-Road scene and this result is a clear indication of his talent.
- Meghan Rutledge had a crack at her first Finke and managed a top 30 overall result which put her ahead of over 300 fellow competitors – time will tell but if Meghan continue to turn up year after year she is capable of a top ten outright.
- Tam Paul is among the senior management team at KTM Australia and the likeable Queenslander earned a sensational win in the 45 Years and Over Class.
- Local riders love to give it to the ‘imports’ and this year was no different with David Walsh and Daymon Stockie being the ‘next best’ rider to the Price/Simmonds freight train to earn 3rd and 4th outright – when you look through the results there are a serious amount of Alice Spring riders who know the fast way to Finke and back.
- Paul Wright was a top ten competitor in the bike class back in the early 1980s and the ex-Mt Isa speedster was back in 2016 in the Quad Class and managed a more than credible 6th place.
