Peter Stevens Motorcycles South Australian MX Championships 2016 mid-season Update
After the completion of round 2 of the Peter Stevens Motorcycles South Australian MX Championships held at Renmark, all classes are looking to be a tight tussle not only for the top spot but for every step of the podium. Here’s a quick update of the championship as it stands.
MRA Round 1
Round one (hosted by MRA at Gillman May14/15) was the homecoming of an international star. Brett Metcalfe and local hero Luke Arbon put on masterclasses of motocross for the crowd and showed just how fast they are especially on tracks that start to get rough. Both Riders headed up the points in all classes contested however would not be taking part in the next round in Renmark due to international commitments for Metcalfe and an unfortunate accident for Arbon before the Murray Bridge National round.
Competition behind the dynamic duo was tight with exciting racing across the board. Whether it was the hard fought Vets class headed by Kim “Ashcan” Ashkenazi or the battles between Stephanie Cutler and Amy Bartsch dominating the women’s class, the racing was on point.
RJMC Round 2
First of all, what a track! The second round of the championships may just be the most important round of the year for our junior riders. The Riverland Junior Motorcycle Club plays host to the Australian Junior Motocross Championship later this year on October 4-9 at Renmark.
This being the case, round 2 of the championships were awash with interstate riders from all over Australia coming to see the new track layout and to try and get a feel for conditions later in the year. This also meant that our local guns had a chance to gauge themselves against the competition and they didn’t let the opportunity pass them bye.
Congratulations to the whole Riverland Junior Motorcycle Club in putting on a fantastic show. Renmark always turns on a great event for spectators and riders alike and this was no exception. Perfect conditions leading up to the event meant that there was enough rain to make sure that when the track was ripped it was a moist sponge cake of loam for the riders to carve through.
The SA Guys held their own against some of the toughest competition in the country and with better starts they could have placed higher in the results. The cream always rises to the top and throughout the junior and senior ranks the old adage rang true.
Standout of the weekend was interstate rider Callum Norton hailing from Lorne, Victoria. Norton showed the form that has earned him a spot on the Australian team that is set to head over to Russia later in the year to compete in the 2016 FIM Junior Motocross World Championship in August.
The Riverland Junior Motorcycle Club have made some major changes in order to bring the National competition to Renmark. The results of all of their hard work has definitely paid off with an amazing fast and flowing track that is being earmarked as one of the best in the country.
With the calibre of riders, commitment of volunteers and the support of all of our sponsors this year’s Peter Stevens Motorcycles South Australian MX Championships is set to be one of the best. So clear the dirt from the tyres and keep the throttles on the stop because we are only halfway through the season.
We are halfway through the 2016 series and look forward to Port Augusta on July 23-24 and the final round at Monarto August 13-14.
