Troy Herfoss – 2016 YMI ASBK Champion
Troy Herfoss capitalised on his pole position to leap out the blocks and lead the field through turn one at Winton Motor Raceway at 1541 this afternoon and teammate Jamie Stauffer was right in his heels ahead of race one victor Cru Halliday. Stauffer was pushed back to third place by Halliday at turn three, Josh Waters also slipped past Stauffer and immediately started challenging Halliday for second place. Meanwhile, Herfoss had put in a 1m26.311 from a standard start to have a 1.8-second buffer over the field by the end of the opening lap.
Glenn Allerton was fifth with 15 laps to run ahead of Daniel Falzon and Brayden Elliott while championship leader Wayne Maxwell was languishing in eighth position just ahead of Beau Beaton. Mike Jones ran wide at turn five and rejoined the race in 16th position.
Josh Waters easily pulled away from Halliday over the next few laps, the race one victor then started to come under attack from Allerton and Stauffer.
Herfoss still had clear air out in front but Josh Waters was slowly reeling him in, with 13 laps to run the Mildura based ex Australian Superbike Champion had the gap down to 1.3-seconds. Wayne Maxwell had moved past Brayden Elliott to take seventh position.
Allerton moved past Halliday to take third position, a long 3.5-seconds behind second placed Waters but Allerton now headed a busy pack tussling over that third position. Halliday, Stauffer and Falzon all right there with him and series leader Wayne Maxwell also looking to join that mix.
As the race passed the halfway mark Herfoss pulled away from Waters, with eight laps to run the gap had blown out to 2.7-seconds. Wayne Maxwell had improved another two positions, the series leader was up to fifth after getting the better of Falzon and Stauffer.
With six laps to run Wayne Maxwell went down at turn five. The Yamaha man walked away, albeit forlornly. From here Herfoss only needed to bring it home in order to be crowned champion.
Three laps later Glenn Allerton was looking strong in second place, he had passed and left Josh Waters in his wake, and started to reel in race leader Troy Herfoss. The Honda rider would have seen that Maxwell was down, and thus knew that he did not even need to win this one to clinch the title, finishing in the top 13 would see him crowned champion.
With two laps to run Allerton had the gap to Herfoss down to 2-seconds. Further back Brayden Elliott had slipped past Josh Waters to take third place.
Allerton closed the gap to Herfoss down to less than a second on the final lap but it was Troy Herfoss that cruised to victory.

Troy Herfoss has done it. He beat Wayne Maxwell to the 2015 Swann Superbike Championship by a single solitary point. Season 2016 has seen the Goulburn 28-year-old get the better of his friend yet again, this time the spoils being the ASBK Championship. To add insult to injury Maxwell’s crash also allowed teammate Glenn Allerton to move past him and clinch the #2 plate for the year, Allerton the highest placed Yamaha rider in the series.
To the victor go the spoils however, and this year that is Paul Free’s Crankt Protein Honda and Troy Herfoss.
