Charter Mason Giant Racing Cycle Team is set to do battle tomorrow evening (Thursday 9th January) in the Cycling Australia Road National Championships prestigious Elite Men’s Criterium event in Ballarat, Victoria. For three of the riders, there’s an intriguing and potentially race winning formula likely to create interest.
Alongside new team signee Josh Taylor will be the former motorcycle racing trio of Jake Magee, Troy Herfoss and Shannon Johnson. All three have won at national and international level aboard motorcycles in a range of disciplines
Jake Magee: (CMGR) Jake is the son of international racer and 500cc GP winner Kevin Magee and a well-credentialed racer in his own right having won an Australian Dirt track title and a 250cc SuperMoto title to boot. Jake’s easy going manner belies a burning desire to win and a brilliant racing brain.
Troy Herfoss: A truly versatile rider, Troy has won an Australia SuperMoto title (2006) and an American SuperMoto title (2008). On the road he’s won an Australia SuperSport (600cc) title and raced a factory Superbike in Australia and in Europe. He’s finished on the podium in the Summer X games and is renowned for being a tough, adaptable and brilliant bike handler. Post Cycling Australia Road National Championships, Troy will head off to Taree to compete aboard his dirt track 450cc motorcycle in the now annual Troy Bayliss Classic.
Shannon Johnson: Along with his Charter Mason Giant Racing team mate Troy Herfoss, Shannon has won Australia SuperSport (600cc) Championship and like Jake and Troy, SJ has won an Australia SuperMoto championship (2004). A multi race winner in a number of motorcycling disciplines, he’s seamlessly transferred his famously aggressive and edgy style to cycling and taken a number of races thanks to explosive sprinting power and unbelievable bike handling skills.
For the three ex motorcycle racers, the Cycling Australia Road National Championships is a chance to not only show their individual talent, but work together as a team and show that top level motorcyclists not only have the sublime bike handling skills that are the envy of the field, but the talent, determination and drive required to take on the nation’s best.
The Cycling Australia Road National Championships Elite Criterium is on at 7:00pm in central Ballarat, Victoria (44km – 40 x 1.1km laps)
