Well, we are two rounds into the AMA Supercross and so far the racing has been sensational though the track at Pheonix looked a little more like an Arenacross track than a full blown supercross track with more tight twists and turns than you could poke a stick at.
As you will read in the blow-by-blow report below Ryan Villopoto managed to come from a tenth place start to slice his way to the lead while last week’s winner KenRoczen was taken down by Justin Barcia as the pair battled for second place leaving Roczen in sixth place at the checkered flag. As per usual Ryan Dungey took too long to pass anyone and was swamped by RV as he made his way to the lead and could only managed a third behind RV and Justin Brayton. It’s bloody frustrating watching Dungey circulate behind other riders.
As we had hoped he would, Matt Moss actually pulled the holeshot in the main event and managed a solid race to finish just outside the top ten while Chad Reed did it the other way around and started just inside the top 20 and managed to scurry up to ninth place. Lawson Bopping managed to squeak into the main night program but didn’t make it to the main.
The 250 West final was once again and Coly Seely and Jason Anderson show with Anderson passing Seeley on the last lap for the win for the second weekend in a row while Dean Ferris is exceeding all expectation by claiming seventh in the main event.
Bugga, Ben Grabham is out of the Dakar Rally but managed to get this message out. “I’m a bit sore and sorry for myself as I started in 79th place yesterday and the dust was so bad that even though I was trying to take it easy I clipped a rock on top of a mountain and ended up going over a pretty big drop.” Grabham explained. “The bike and I tumbled close to 100 metres down the mountain, my head was knocked a bit silly for the day and the bike was not coming out of where it was without a chopper to lift it out. It took me an 8-hour taxi ride over the mountains to catch back up with the team.”
“I didn’t know where I was and neither did anyone else for about 7 hours and to make matters worse, no one around me could speak any English, my phone was flat and I was starting to think I was going to have to live there until I learned how to speak Spanish.”
Good to see that Ben is not inujured and still in good spirits, you can bet he will be back for another crack next year.

2014 Australian Silly Season Continues – Here’s the Latest!!
Now that Kale Makeham (Tunetech Racing KTM), Brenden Harrison (Twe12e Clothing KTM), Dean Porter (Berry Sweet/Mandurah City KTM), Jack Simpson (Bolton’s KTM) and Louis Calvin (Berry Sweet/Mandurah City KTM), Broc Winston (Ando Husqvarna), Jay Wilson (Serco) and Daniel McCoy (65 TM Racing) have all found homes for 2014 we now turn our attention to who hasn’t signed.
So far it looks like Jay Marmont will return to CDR Yamaha, Ryan Marmont will stay with Raceline Suzuki and Jake Moss will take his Campbell Mining money to the Kawasaki team to join Adam Monea.
With Cody Cooper going over to Honda in New Zealand and more than likely line up for the Carlton Dry Honda team, Suzuki has yet to find a teammate for Matt Moss and don’t be surprised if its Lawson Bopping who is over in the States with Matt right now doing a few rounds of the AMA Supercross Championship.
So, the top riders from the 2013 season that have yet to be signed are as follows: Takeshi Katsuya, Nick Sutherland, Dylan Long, Rhys Carter, Kane Lamont, Robbie Marshall, Kade Mosig, Dylan Petersen, Lawson Bopping, Jacob Wright, Codie Mackie, Jackson Richardson, Sam Martin, Wade Hunter, Beau Ralston, Keiren Hall and Geran Stapleton.

Before the serious racing started at Pheonix there was a tricky rhythm section which claimed GEICO Honda 250SX rider Zach Bell and JGR/Toyota Yamaha 450SX rider Josh Grant diring practice. The result is that Bell has a broken collarbone and had to sit out the nights racing while Grant tried to battle on with a sore shoulder but didn’t make it to the main program
Eli Tomac apparently damaged his shoulder in a crash at last week’s Anaheim heat race and he tried suiting up today but couldn’t ride. Team Manager Mike LaRocco says the injury doesn’t require surgery but Eli will now probably take a week or two off before getting back on the bike. “We’d like him to get in a full week of riding before he comes back to race,” said LaRocco. “Now that we’ve missed two rounds there’s no reason to rush.”
450 Race Report: Matt Moss pulled the holeshot from the outside but coming out of the first corner Justin Brayton slide up the inside of Moss who had Ryan Dungey, Ken Roczen and Justin Barcia hot on his tail. Chad Reed tangled bars with Villopoto out of the gate leaving both riders well back from the leaders while James Stewart was sitting just inside the top ten.
Dungey, Roczen and Barcia made their way by Moss and moved toward the rear wheel of Brayton and as per usual wherever Barcia is on the track you get action and the Honda rider sliced under Roczen and took his front wheel out from under him just as Ryan Villopoto was pushing to get by.
Brayton was actually stretching his lead at this stage while Dungey was trying to keep Barcia at bay but once Villopoto caught up to Barcia you could see Dungey starting to pull away and start making moves on a very determined Brayton.
Brayton was definitely getting through the whoops better than Dungey which allowed the Yamaha rider a bit of breathing space each lap but once Villopoto arrived on the scene he simply slice through Dungey then Brayton to take the lead and the eventual win.
Dungey was pushing hard to get by Brayton but on the second to last lap a laped rider held him up in the rhythm section handing a well earned second place to Brayton. Dungey scored yet another podoim ahead of Stewart who got by Barcia late in the race while Roczen had to settle for sixth ahead of Andrew Short, Broc Tickle, Reed, Hahn and Moss.
Ryan Villopoto had this to say after the race. “Yeh, the race was good, I didn’t get the start we were after but I worked my way through the pack, made some good passed and made them stick, that was good, we made some improvements with the shock this week and it showed, the track was sliipery and you have to be patient here.”
Just Braytonn was wrapped with his ride. “I missed the podium throughout last year so this is great, Yamaha came out with a new bike and the thing is unbelievable, the team and I just went to work, I hired Nathan Ramsay as a riding coach and we have clicked so well, I just feel like all the pieces of the puzzle are coming together and I just need to keep getting starts like that.
Ryan Dungey struggled. “I was stuggling through the whoops and the track was so slippery you had to be careful, I wanted to push by Brayton for the lead but couldn’t get the drive out of some of the key corners to get by.”

250 Race Report: Yamalube Star Yamaha rider Cooper Webb pulled the holeshot ahead of Jason Anderson, Cole Seely, Shane McElrath, Dean Wilson while Zach Osborne was moving by Dean Ferris to enter the fray at the front of the field.
Seely got around Anderson and Webb for the lead then Anderson got by Webb who had McElrath looking for a way by but the two came together and took themselves out of a podium position. That left Wilson in third but Zach Osborne continued to move forward and got by Wilson for third with a handfl of laps remaining.
Out front Seely was holding a two second lead ahead of Anderson but on the last lap Anderson found a better line out of a corner and blew by Seely to take his second win in a row.
“I just pushed for it and waited for something to happen, on the last lap I was able to get onto his (Seely) back wheel and make the pass again, it’s just crazy, I am really on it this year but this is what I worked for so I don’t want to let it slip away,” said Anderson after the race.

– – Southwick To Hold Racing Again
With the New Year brought the beginning of the new lease for Motocross 338 and the beginning of a new chapter in the long history of the legendary motocross track in Southwick Massachusetts. Michael Grondahl, the new lease holder, could finally begin moving forward on his quest to return the ‘Wick to its former glory as one of the premier motocross facilities in the country.
Mike began racing at the ‘Wick in 1979 with the NESC and earned his AMA Pro Motocross license in 1981. He has been passionately involved in the sport ever since. Mike was a talented motocross racer but it turns out he is a better businessman. He is the co-founder and former CEO of Planet Fitness, one of the partners of the GEICO Honda team as well as Alias MX and owns several businesses outside the motocross industry. His lifelong passion for motocross combined with his business success and acumen makes him a perfect steward to guide Motocross 338 into the future and develop it into a world-class facility.
With the change in lease holders, a number of minor issues were expected however it has also brought one unforeseen challenge. There have been a lot of rumors and speculation regarding the status of the track with many pronouncing Southwick DOA. That is simply not true. Near the end of 2013, it was discovered that about one acre of the pit area is on property owned by the school next door. That one acre completely blocks access to the pits.
The previous lease for Motocross 338 did not end until December 31st 2013, therefore Mike was unable to do any work on the track or facility, do anything to address the land issue or work with the NESC and NEMX to schedule races until after January 1st 2014. He has however, purchased several pieces of heavy equipment and has been working on putting together a team to reconfigure and rebuild the track, update the facilities and run the events.
On January 8, Mike met with officials from the town of Southwick and the school. The meeting was generally positive and the school officials were very supportive of allowing Motocross 338 to lease the one acre of land to allow access to the pits.
In the past, due to the limited spectator parking available at the facility for the Southwick National, Motocross 338 partnered with the school which provided parking on school property for the event. It was a win-win for Motocross 338 and the school because there was plenty of temporary spectator parking for the National and it gave the school additional income for education. However the decision to enter into a long-term lease for the one acre of school property is ultimately up to the Southwick town officials.
The next meeting with town and school officials is set for January 27. If the land issue is resolved at that meeting, work will begin as soon as the ink is dry on the land lease with the school.
The reality at this point is if an agreement is reached quickly, there will likely be time to hold a few races later in 2014. Since the scheduling of NESC and NEMX races could not wait for this issue to be resolved, it is hoped they will be able to fit at least one Southwick event into their 2014 schedules with a return to a normal schedule in 2015. If there are additional delays it is possible there won’t be any races until 2015.
Mike is optimistic an agreement will be reached with the town and is currently negotiating with another adjacent land owner to either enter into a long-term lease or to purchase 30 acres of land. If the deal comes to fruition there will be plenty of room for expansion of the facility. What this means for the future of Motocross 338 is with the additional 30 acres plus the continued partnership with the school for spectator parking, the sky is the limit. Among the goals Mike has set for 2015 and beyond is to restore Southwick to the NESC and NEMX schedules, bring the AMA National back to Southwick, host a round of the USGP and host the MXoN. In addition, he has many ideas to bring some big one-off motocross events to the iconic track.
Another status update will be released shortly after the January 27th meeting with Southwick officials.
– – Stijbos Breaks Pelvis
Suzuki Grand Prix rider Kevin Strijbos will be out of action for at least four weeks after breaking part of his pelvis bone as a result of a crashing into a fallen rider while training at Lommel in Belgium on Tuesday.
Strijbos went to Dr. Claes at the Herentals Hospital, to be looked at. Suzuki thinks he will be ready for the start of the GPs on March 1.
Kevin said,”Obviously I’m pretty gutted about this. When I got to the face of the jump I saw someone waving, but it was already too late to react and I landed with my front wheel just in front of the seat of the fallen bike. It’s a setback, and a shame, as my preparations were going really well. We had a super-good training week with the team in Portugal and everything was heading in the right direction. Sadly it is one of those things that is a part of our sport.”
