Superbike competitors seem content to keep their powder dry ahead of this afternoon’s QP2
Tumbles for Falzon and Waters in QP1
Yamaha Motor Finance ASBK 2017 – Round Five – Morgan Park
Superbike competitors hit the track this morning at 1125 under clear skies with an ambient temperature nudging 18-degrees and a track temperature climbing towards the mid 30s.
A good crowd of people was already building at the circuit. The local police were also out in force, a patrol car and motorcycle lurking up and down the road outside the circuit.
Cru Halliday got straight down to business with a 1m13.235 on his third lap of the day. Not as quick as his 1m13.148 from Friday afternoon and the Camden based 29-year-old returned to the pits after that lap. And did not bother taking to the track again for the remainder of the session.
Corey Turner quickly improved on his Friday best aboard the DesmoSport Ducati. The Bendigo born teenager stringing plenty of laps together in the first half of the session for a best of 1m13.386 on his sixth lap before returning to the pits after eight laps for some adjustments.
Daniel Falzon was another rider on the improve, the JD Racing YZF-R1 circulated in a 1m13.324 as the 30-minute session passed the halfway mark, a tenth quicker than he managed on Friday.
Corey Turner returned to the track with 11-minutes remaining in the session only for the session to be red-flagged shortly thereafter. Turn 10 of this Morgan Park circuit again claiming another victim, this time around it was Daniel Falzon. The South Australian took a hefty knock to the head, not knowing where he was when he initially came to and is awaiting medical clearance before he can participate in the final qualifying session later this afternoon.
The session got going again after a short delay and it was then that Friday pacesetter Troy Herfoss decided to turn up the wick. A 1m13.309
Josh Waters went down softly at turn six with three-minutes remaining in the session while on a quick one, he was one-tenth under the best of the session thus far when he ran off the circuit.
Bryan Staring found a lot of time today. The #67 Honda rider has never raced at this circuit before and only managed a 1m14.588 on Friday but knocked more than half-a-second off that this morning to indicate he is making progress in the right direction.
At the chequered flag it was still that early 1m13.235 from Halliday good enough to top the session from Herfoss’ 1m13.309 and Falzon’s 1m13.324.
