2008 Queensland State Motocross Championships
The final round of The Yamaha Qld Motocross Championship held at Kilcoy on the ANZAC long weekend was wrapped up with a double bonus for Husqvarna’s Adam Cini from Morayfield, taking out both the Pro Open and Pro Lite classes.
On Saturday in the Pro Opens class, Cini took the hole shot and lead the early stages of the race, and after a long battle with Honda Australia’s Dean Ferris, Cini settled for second and some very valuable championship points.
On Sunday there were 2 races left to decide the title and Cini was going into race 1 with an 8 point lead in the championship.
In the first race Cini got away with the lead group and after a frantic dice for the lead in the early stages, Cini settled for 3rd position at the end, two positions in front of championship contender Dean Ferris who slid off while dicing with the front group.
This increased Cini’s lead in the championship and if Ferris won the last race Cini only had to finish fifth to take the title. By the last race, the conditions of the track had become extremely dusty. Cini again got away well but unfortunately another rider ran into the back of Adam squashing the exhaust which affected the performance of the bike, by this stage the lead riders were gone, and out front was Honda’s Dean Ferris.
Cini showed true grit and fought his way back to 5th position which was enough to take the title. “I am so stoked. I had a great package for the whole series, my Husqvarna TC450 has surprised everyone and the Metzeler tyres were great. By the last race I had a 12 point gap so I knew it was tight, I kept in control and I deserve to take the win” said Cini.
In the Pro Lites Class all the top riders knew they had some work to do if they wanted to take out the championship as Cini lead by 25 points going into the last round.
Cini finished a comfortable 3rd in the first race on Saturday and then on Sunday he hole shotted the first race and led from start to finish in front of KTM’s Todd Waters and Honda’s Dean Ferris. This was a great result as Cini only needed one point in the final Moto if Ferris won to take the Championship.
Cini again took the holeshot and by race end settled for a comfortable 3rd position and his second Championship for the day.
“Now this has surprised me. At the start of the year I wasn’t sure if I could develop and race both classes, I have trained and rode every day and it has paid off. I couldn’t fault anything about my Husqvarna TC250, it rode like a gem. I just want to thank Paul & Sue for giving me this opportunity and having faith in me, my mechanic Johnny Kittle who had the patience for all the swapping and changing and of course Vic who helped me today and the rest of the crew and my personal sponsors. Last of all not to forget my fiancée Tammy who has dealt with my career for so long” laughed Cini.
Another great score for Husqvarna, was Jake Wright from Cairns Holeshot Moto. Jake Wright took out second in the Qld Junior Lite 250 13-14 years championship behind Shaun Redhead and 5th in the junior lites 125 class.
“I am happy and sad. The 250 class championship all went to plan but the 125 class ended up tragic for me. In the first corner of the last race, Jay Wilson crashed and his handle bar got stuck into my spoke. It took a while to get untangled and finally I took off with anger as I knew I had to beat Aaron Cowell and Jackson Richardson to get on podium. My Husqvarna CR125 was pushed to the limit as I wormed my way through the pack. I managed to catch up and over take Richardson and could see Cowell in front of me but it was the end of the race. I reckon I rode the best I had in this class but didn’t have enough laps left to get there. I would like to thank Husqvarna, my parents and sponsors for all there support” said Wright.

| – Redhead takes junior victories for Yamaha – There are another three championship trophies on the mantle piece for the Queensland Yamaha Junior Development Team after the final round of the Yamaha Queensland Motocross Championships over the weekend. The tight and twisting layout of Kilcoy, one-hour north west of Brisbane, hosted the final round and the QYJDT boys were keen to stamp their authority on the 2008 championship and take home the silverware. Shaun Redhead (Pro Griffin Yamaha) spearheaded the team superbly to claim both the 13 to 15 years 125cc and also the 13 to 14 years Lites. Redhead over came a seven-point deficit coming into the final round of the 125cc class behind long time rival, Dylan Peterson, yet managed to take the championship with three points to spare. In the 13 to 14 years Lites division, Redhead dominated proceedings and never lost a race the entire series and has well and truly earnt the right to run the number 1 plate in Queensland junior motocross for 2008/2009. “I really didn’t think I would be able to make up the seven points on Dylan in the 125cc. He rides great but he made a mistake and I was able to make the most of it and gain all the points I needed. I had my goals at the start of the year and this is another two ticked off and I am pumped about that. I can’t thank the team enough for their support now its time to get to work on bigger things,” said the determined Redhead. The 9 to 11 years Mini Lites championship also belongs to QYJDT with Joel Dinsdale (Bullet Bikes) pulling down the 2008 championship win. Dinsdale, who had dominated the opening two rounds, got off to a rough start in round three, but regrouped well to finish with 8-2-1 moto scores and claim the championship with 23 points to spare. “I was a bit nervous in the first race this weekend, but the next two I got sorted out and rode better. I was excited to get the chance to ride with this team and glad that I can give them this championship. It’s pretty cool hanging out with everyone in the Yamaha pits,” Dinsdale offers. Scott Mann (Jimboomba Motorcycles) again put together a solid performance and bought home his YZ85cc in fourth place for the day and fourth overall in the championship. A collapsed rear wheel at the second round, the result of hitting another rider, hurt Mann in the overall championship table, but Mann continues to improve and his dogged efforts on the track will be rewarded in the future. “I think I rode pretty well today and to finish fourth in the championship was a good result. The guys in front of me are pretty quick, but I am getting closer and it won’t be long until I am right there in the middle of them,” Mann said. Yamaha Queensland Manager, Ray Howard was also on hand to watch the victorious team came away suitably impressed with their efforts. |
