Australian Supercross star Chad Reed has extended his lead in the 2008 Monster Energy Drink AMA Supercross, an FIM World Championship, after winning the third round of the series at Anaheim’s Angel Stadium tonight.
Reed, the clear crowd favourite, posted the fastest overall time on the retro 1986 replica track and was awarded the number one gate pick for the Main Event.
While many of the top ten were caught out by the challenging characteristics of the retro track, Reed rode his Yamaha YZ450F flawlessly to lead the race from the opening lap.
Finishing seven seconds ahead of his nearest rival, the 2004 Supercross Champion acknowledged the retro track provided some interesting racing.
“I feel awesome,” said Reed. “It was great to race on the retro track tonight; I had a ball out there.”
“The team has done an amazing job with my bike and it is a lot of fun to race”.
“I am looking forward to the next round in San Francisco, it will be a special night for me as it will be held on Australia Day and I’ll be wearing the green and gold with pride.” he added.
With little time to celebrate Reed, who now sits 16 points clear of second placed rider Kevin Windham, will prepare for Round 4 of the Championship which will be held at San Francisco’s AT&T Park next Saturday, January 26.
In the Pro Lites division Rockstar/Makita Suzuki man Ryan Dungey took outright honours over Broc Hepler (Yamaha) by 1.2 seconds. Kawasaki’s Austin Stroupe rounded out the podium while Queensland youngster Daniel Reardon came in fourth to make it four different manufacturers in the top four results. Fellow Aussie Brett Metcalfe brought his Kawasaki home in fifth also less than ten seconds behind race winner Dungey with a considerable margin then back to Robert Kiniry and Billy Laninovich.
With two wins and a second place to his credit from the opening three rounds Dungey (72 pts) now has a considerable 22 point lead over Hepler (50 pts) while Dan Reardon’s (49 pts) fourth place at Anaheim was enough to promote him into third overall in the rankings. Reardon is now only a single point adrift of Hepler in what has been a fantastic start to his career in the AMA.
