Toby Price came to grief 155 km in to Stage Nine
After completing the Marathon Stage on a badly slashed tyre secured to the rim by cable-ties, Toby Price was running strongly on new rubber this morning before a crash 155 kilometres in today’s stage brought the Australian undone.
Price had a significant lead at Tuesday mornings first way-point before an error saw him lose time through the following sector.
The 33-year-old then clawed that ground back again in the next sector to be only 12-seconds behind the leaders before crashing.
Price was running a strong second place in the overall standings behind Nacho Cornejo but after crashing heavily was then air-lifted to Tabuk for x-rays where it was confirmed the Australian had broken his collarbone and suffered extensive bruising.
That signals the end of his tilt at Dakar 2021.
Toby Price had looked well on his way to winning another Dakar Rally, with two stage victories already under his belt, and an impressive set of results overall. P
rice has always finished on the podium when he completed the Dakar Rally, only having to withdraw in 2017 when he crashed and broke his femur. He took third in 2015 at his debut Dakar, then won in 2016 when he returned. 2018 saw him once again third, before taking another win in 2019 despite riding with a broken wrist. 2020 marked Toby Price finishing third once again.
