2022 Indian FTR1200
Two years since Indian first released the FTR1200 out into the wild the Iowa based company have tweaked the engine management system for better starting and throttle response while a new FTR base model has been added to the line-up.Â
Of the four 2022 models only the FTR Rally retains the peculiarly odd-sized and, it must be said, quite odd feeling 150/70-18 rear and 120/70-19 front tyres of the original bikes, while the base model FTR, the FTR S and FTR R Carbon now roll on a much more conventional set-up of 120/70-17 front and 180/55-17 rear.Â
Hallelujah I say, great to see an American motorcycle company that takes feedback and acts on it…. My only real gripes with the bikes from the start was the fuelling and the quirky handling characteristics brought on by the distinctly odd tyre profiles. (Trev’s review of the original models here)
Both of those primary whinges look to be fixed across the range, while the FTR Rally is the only model to retain the previous odd rubber profiles.
The FTR Rally though will no longer be available in the Australian market, thus our local FTR line-up all roll on the new rubber.
The rim changes for the FTR, FTR S and FTR R Carbon have also reduced the seat height by 35 mm.
The base model FTR has analogue clocks rather than the 4.3-inch touch-screen TFT seen on its S and R siblings. Â
The S and the R models are also the only ones to get the full suite of electronic safety aids such as traction/stability/wheelie control. The base FTR only has ABS.
As before the FTR R Carbon rides on fully-adjustable Ohlins but the FTR and FTR S models now also gain full adjustability of their Sachs suspension.
All models now have a more street oriented 120 mm of suspension travel, 30 mm less than before.
Rear-cylinder deactivation is standard across the range to help mitigate the amount of heat being transferred to the rider at idle. Cruise control is also standard.Â
The new line-up are dubbed 2022 models by Indian but we expect to see them land in Australian dealerships in the coming months with the official word from Indian Australia suggesting ‘Q2 2021’.Â

2022 Indian FTR 1200 Australian line-up
FTR
Starting at $19,995 Rideaway, the base FTR features an analogue gauge and is available in Black Smoke with red accents throughout, including red pinstripes on the wheels, red Indian Motorcycle script branding across the tank, and a red rear shock spring.
FTR S
With two paint options, Maroon Metallic and White Smoke, the FTR S begins at $22,995 Rideaway.
The premium offering includes Indian Motorcycle’s 4.3-inch touchscreen display, which offer phone integration via Bluetooth or USB and configurable gauges.
The FTR S is standard with an upgraded Akrapovic exhaust, three ride modes, wheelie control with rear lift mitigation, stability control, traction control and cornering ABS.
Additionally, a fast-charging USB port provides a convenient means to staying charged.
FTR R Carbon
The FTR R Carbon sits at the top as the premier model in the FTR line-up. In addition to the aforementioned features listed with the FTR S, the FTR R Carbon sets itself apart with carbon-fibre tank covers, front fender and headlight nacelle, fully-adjustable Öhlins gold-coloured forks and piggy-back shocks, a black Akrapovic exhaust, premium seat cover, and numbered badging on the console. The FTR R Carbon is available starting at $25,995 Rideaway.
