German MotoGP Race Day Guide – Official statistics compiled by Dr. Martin Raines
• Marc Marquez is starting from pole for the seventh time in 2014. He has qualified on pole and won at the German GP for the last four years; in the 125cc class in 2010, the Moto2 class in both 2011 & 2012 and in MotoGP last year. Marquez is aiming to become the first rider to win the opening nine races of the year since Giacomo Agostini won the first ten races of the 1970 season.
• In second place on the grid is Dani Pedrosa, who has won in the MotoGP class at the Sachsenring on four occasions, in addition to two GP wins at the circuit in the 250cc class.
• Taking the final place on the front row is Stefan Bradl, his second front row start of the year. He is the first German rider to start from the front row in the MotoGP class at the Sachsenring circuit.
• In fourth place on the grid is Aleix Espargaro, the fifth time this year that he has qualified on the second row.
• In the middle of the second row is Jorge Lorenzo, who has finished second on four occasions at the Sachsenring, but has never stood on the top step at the German GP in any of the classes.
• Valentino Rossi starts from the final place on the second row of the grid. Rossi has had four MotoGP wins at the Sachsenring, including in 2006 when he won from 11th place on the grid.
• In seventh place on the grid is Andrea Iannone – the third time in four races that he has been the highest placed Ducati rider in qualifying.
• Pol Espargaro is in eighth place on the grid – his best qualifying result since the Italian GP.
• After crashing three times in practice and again in qualifying, Bradley Smith has qualified in ninth place on the grid, at the circuit where he finished 6th last year which equalled his best result of his rookie season in the MotoGP class.
• Nicky Hayden, who has qualified in 12th place on the grid, has finished on the podium on four occasions at the Sachsenring circuit.
Moto2™
• Dominique Aegerter starts from pole for the first time in his GP career in what will be his 129th grand prix start. This is the first pole in Moto2 for a Suter rider since Nico Terol was on pole at Aragon last year.
• In second place on the grid is Mika Kallio, who won the 125cc GP at the Sachsenring back in 2005 and was second behind Marc Marquez in the Moto2 race in Germany two years ago.
• Tito Rabat is in third place on the grid, his eighth front row start of the year. Sachsenring is one of only five current circuits where Rabat has not had a podium finish in GP racing.
• Jordi Torres heads the second row, which is his best qualifying result since he was third on the grid at the final race of 2013 in Valencia.
• Franco Morbidelli, making just his 12th grand prix start, is in fifth place on the grid, which is his best qualifying result so far in GP racing; his previous best was eighth on the grid at Mugello earlier this year.
• Taking the final place on the second row is Simone Corsi, who finished second last year in Germany – his only podium finish of 2013.
Moto3™
• Jack Miller starts from pole for the fifth time in 2014. He has only won once from his previous four poles this year, at the second race of the year in Austin.
• Alexis Masbou starts from second place on the grid, which equals his best ever qualifying result which he had at the Malaysian Grand Prix last year. Masbou finished second in the Moto3 race in Germany two years ago – the only podium finish of his GP career.
• Alex Marquez is in third place on the grid. Marquez will be aiming to become just the third rider to win three successive Moto3 races, along with Maverick Viñales and Luis Salom.
• Heading the second row is Karel Hanika, his best qualifying result so far in his debut season in grand prix racing.
• Danny Kent is in fifth place on the grid, the first time he has qualified in the top ten since the Grand Prix of Argentina.
• Brad Binder is the highest placed Mahindra rider in qualifying, in sixth place on the grid.
• In seventh place on the grid is Alex Rins, who won the Moto3 race in Germany last year.
