MX Nationals 2015 – Round Three – Broadford – By Todd Jarratt
After many years of Motorcycling Victoria’s undulating circuit at Broadford being dealt with tough reviews on the nationals calendar, 2015 brought about a big change in opinion from both riders and industry personnel. With a constantly changing and rain threatening weather forecast set for the weekend of racing, Motorcycling Victoria, their staff and the MX Nationals management crew handled the track preparation and event perfectly, which brought about an unbelievable circuit and with that, some seriously spectacular racing!Â
In the Monster Energy MX1 class, a controversial moto one saw CDR Yamaha teammates Daniel Reardon and Kade Mosig start up front and edge away from the rest of the field in what was looking to be a 1-2 result for Craig Dack early on. Then, in a shock to the whole pits the lead duo’s lines came together entering a tight right hand turn leaving them both on the ground and out of contention for the race win. Luke Styke, the rider in third was the one to take advantage of the incident and inherited the race lead never looking back, and in doing so broke through for his first ever MX Nationals MX1 race win.
After some unexpected and disappointing results from the NPS Monster Energy Kawasaki riders of Adam Monea and John Phillips at the first two rounds of the series, the duo bounced back in moto one at Broadford to trail Styke home for second and third place finishes respectively – their best results of the season thus far. Finishing just behind in fourth was Penrite Oils Honda rider Cody Cooper, with the now sole factory Suzuki pilot of Kale Makeham rounding out the top five. Makeham was followed to the line by Jesse Dobson and Kirk Gibbs, who suffered from several crashes during the moto. Rounding out the top ten were Dylan Long, Cheyne Boyd and Daniel McCoy.
Eventually, Kade Mosig finished the race in 12th place finish after spending a fair chunk of time in the mechanic’s area post collision trying to straighten up his bike. There was no such luck for Mosig’s teammate and early race leader Reardon though, as the incident with his teammate punched a hole in his water pump – leading to his second DNF in just six races and a huge points deficit in terms of the championship standings.
In moto two it was Cody Cooper who grabbed the holeshot with Reardon and Gibbs though quickly making their way around the New Zealand rider and setting into battle for the lead, exchanging the number one spot numerous times. Eventually, it was Gibbs the victor with Reardon second and maiden overall round winner Luke Styke following the pair home in third. Finishing fourth was Adam Monea, ahead of the fastest rider of the moto and privateer Dylan Long. Sixth position was taken up by Cooper, ahead of Lawson Bopping, Kade Mosig, Kale Makeham and Cheyne Boyd.
In the Motul MX2 Class it was another Serco Yamaha 1-2 overall result, with Luke Clout recording his first ever clean sweep of the class, and Jed Beaton overcoming adversity to finish the day with 3-2 moto scores for second overall.
In moto one Nathan Crawford grabbed the holeshot and early race lead, before going down twice and discontinuing riding for the day due to what looks to be some broken ribs and a damaged shoulder. When Crawford went down it was Clout who inherited the race lead and remained out front free from any pressure for the entire 30 minutes. JCR Yamaha rider Jay Wilson held on to the runner up spot, after a late race charge from Beaton saw the two battling for second. Ultimately, Beaton would go down in the second to last turn while trying make a pass on Wilson and remount just in time to cross the line ahead of fourth place finisher Takeshi Katsuya. Wade Hunter finished in an impressive fourth ahead of Geran Stapleton, Dylan Wills, Hamish Harwood, Jack Simpson and Kyle Webster.
In moto two, all of the focus was on Luke Clout again as he streaked away for the race win ahead of teammate Jed Beaton and Takeshi Katsuya, who in finishing third cemented himself on the final step on the podium for the second time in three rounds of racing. Fourth position in the moto was taken up by Geran Stapleton who led home Dylan Leary, Riley Graham, Wade Hunter, Luke Arbon, Joel Wightman and Hamish Harwood. Both Hunter and Arbon were positioned further up in the running order on track, but due to corner cutting controversies, were both issued in race time penalties and therefore relegated to the positions of seventh and eighth respectively. Another rider who was hit with in race time penalties, though this time with a crazy 30 seconds worth, was championship contender Jay Wilson. After falling numerous times and being issued the time docks, Wilson ultimately finished the moto in 15th, dropping a significant amount of points in the title chase.
In the Pirelli MXD class Wilson Todd stated further claim to his current reign in the Under 19’s field, wrapping up another overall round victory ahead of local boy Wayde Carter and Raceline Pirelli Suzuki fill in rider, Jesse Madden.
In moto one, Madden grabbed the holeshot and led early on before Todd was able to make the move and remain in the number one spot all the way through to the finish. Madden continued in close proximity to Todd all the way to the checkers and in doing so held on for second ahead of Tasmanian Jonte Reynders in third, who charged late through late in the moto to score his first ever MX Nationals podium. Kaleb Barham finished in fourth with Wayde Carter fifth, Connor Tierney sixth, Jayden Rykers seventh, Jamie Harvey eighth, Lachlan Davis ninth and Bailey Coxon rounding out the top ten.
In moto two, it was again Madden with the holeshot and early lead, but this time around it was Wayde Carter who made the pass early on and checked out from the rest of the field to take the moto victory. Jayden Rykers charged through the pack for the entire 20 minutes to finish second ahead of Wilson Todd in third and fourth place Barham. Madden faded late in the moto but held on to finish fifth ahead of Davis, Toby Stevens, Bailey Coxon, Cory Watts, and Connor Tierney.
In the Yamaha Australian Women’s Motocross Championship it was the Victorian Emma Milesevic who took the round win on a count back from defending national champion Maddy Brown. Third place overall went to the now full time offroad racer Tayla Jones, ahead of Courtney Whyte-Dennis, Emilie Karlsson, Jozee Adamson, former Australian champion Tori Dare, Taylar Ramptom, Tamara Gray and Alysha Goullet, who rounded out the top ten. Next in line, finishing in 11th for round one of the Women’s series was Morgan Wright, ahead of Sophie Coldicutt, Melissa Holmes, Kaitlyn Wakartschuk, Jenna Lupo and Samanatha Beecroft.
The MX Nationals will return to action at Murray Bridge, SA in three weeks time!
Until then, stay safe and ride hard!
