Grand Prix of Catalunya facts and statistics

The Circuit de Catalunya was first included in the motorcycle grand prix series in 1992 and this is the 24th successive year that it has hosted a grand prix event. Below are some stats and facts about motorcycle grand prix racing at the circuit:

• Only three current venues have a longer on-going sequence of hosting grand prix events: Jerez, Mugello and Assen.
• The last time that Spain did not have at least one GP winner across the three classes at the Catalan Grand Prix was 2002.
• Spanish riders won all three classes in Catalunya in both 2013 and 2014. The last non-Spanish rider to win a grand prix in Catalunya is Andrea Iannone in the Moto2 class in 2012.

• During the four-stroke MotoGP era, Yamaha have taken seven victories, Honda have had four wins and Ducati two.
• The last win by Suzuki at the Catalunya Grand Prix was in 2000, when Kenny Roberts won the 500cc race. Since the introduction of the MotoGP formula in 2002 the best results by Suzuki riders have been 4th place finishes by John Hopkins in both 2006 and 2007.
• The last podium finish by a Ducati rider at the Catalan GP was the 3rd place finish by Casey Stoner in 2010.
• Honda riders have started from pole for the MotoGP race in Catalunya for the last four years, but none of those riders has gone on to win the race from pole.
• The last Yamaha rider to start from pole was Jorge Lorenzo in 2010. Ducati have had a single pole at the Catalunya GP – with Casey Stoner in 2008.

• Valentino Rossi is the most successful rider across all grand prix classes at the Catalunya circuit with nine victories (1 x 125cc, 2 x 250cc, 1 x 500cc, 5 x MotoGP). The next most successful, with four wins each in Catalunya, are Jorge Lorenzo (1 x 250cc, 3 x MotoGP™) and Max Biaggi (4 x 250cc).
• There have been eight premier-class victories by Spanish riders at the Catalunya circuit; Alex Criville in 1995 & 1999, Carlos Checa in 1996, Dani Pedrosa in 2008, Jorge Lorenzo in 2010, 2012 & 2013 and Marc Marquez last year.
• There has been at least one Spanish rider on the podium in the MotoGP race at the Catalan GP for the last eight years.
• Only two riders have won the MotoGP race at Catalunya from pole position: Valentino Rossi in 2006 and Jorge Lorenzo in 2010.
• The win by Marc Marquez in Catalunya last year was the 100th victory for Honda in the four-stroke MotoGP class which was introduced in 2002, as a replacement for the 500cc category as the premier-class of grand prix racing.
• The three riders who won at Catalunya last year all went on to win their respective world titles.
• Marc Marquez won the MotoGP race at Catalunya last year and Alex Marquez won the Moto3 race – the first time in 66 years of World Championship competition that siblings both won Grand Prix races on the same day.

Jorge Lorenzo’s win at Mugello was the 88th time that he has stood on the podium since moving up to the MotoGP class in 2008. As shown in the table below, this is the same number of podium finishes in the premier-class as eight times world 500cc champion, Giacomo Agostini.

Jorge Lorenzo set to equal Mike Hailwood

Jorge Lorenzo’s victory at the Italian Grand Prix was the 36th time he has stood on the top step of the podium in the MotoGP class. As shown in the following list, this is just one less premier-class grand prix win than four-time 500cc world champion Mike Hailwood.

Grand Prix racing numbers

• 78 – Jorge Lorenzo has won the last three MotoGP races from start to finish, leading across the line at the end of every lap, which is 78 consecutive laps in the lead. Only once before in the MotoGP era has a rider led every lap of three successive races – Casey Stoner in 2007 at the US, Czech and San Marino grands prix. In addition, Stoner led for the opening six laps of the following race in Portugal, making it 88 successive laps where he led across the line. If Lorenzo leads the race in Catalunya for the first eleven laps he will set a new record for most consecutive laps led in the MotoGP class.
• 46 – Danny Kent’s forty six points lead in the world championship classification is the greatest points lead any rider has had at the head of the lightweightclass championship standings after six races since Haruchika Aoki had a lead of 52 points over Stefano Perugini in the 125cc classification after six races of the 1995 season.
• 24 – Pol Espargaro celebrates his 24th birthday on the Wednesday before the Grand Prix of Catalunya.
• 6 – Valentino Rossi has finished on the podium at each of the opening six races of the year, something he last achieved ten years ago in 2005 when he went on to finish on the podium at the first eleven races of the year.

• 0.127 seconds – At the end of the Moto3 race at Mugello, just 0.127 seconds covered the first three riders across the line. This is the fourth time already this year that the three podium finishers in the Moto3 class have been separated by less than half a second.
• 5 – Andrea Iannone qualified on pole for the first time at Mugello, to become the just the fifth rider to start a MotoGP race from pole on a Ducati, along with: Casey Stoner, Loris Capirossi, Andrea Dovizioso and Sete Gibernau.
• 3 – Jorge Lorenzo has won the last three MotoGP races. This the fifth time in his grand prix career that he has had three successive wins; four times in the MotoGP class and once in the 250cc class. He has not yet managed to extend this to four successive wins.
• 3 – Catalunya is one of just three circuits where Marc Marquez has not been on pole since moving up to the MotoGP class at the start of 2013, along with Motegi and Assen.
• 1 – At the Italian Grand Prix, Miguel Oliveira became the first rider from Portugal to win a race in any class of grand prix racing. This adds to other records he already holds of being the first Portuguese rider to finish on a grand prix podium (Catalunya in 2012) and the first Portuguese rider to start a GP race from pole position, at the Dutch TT in 2013.

• 1 – Following the crashes at Mugello by Franco Morbidelli, Tom Luthi and Hafizh Syahrin, there is now just one rider in the Moto2 class who has scored points at every one of the first six races of the year – championship leader Johann Zarco.
• 0 – There has not been a Honda rider finish on the podium at the last two MotoGP races. The last time that there were two successive MotoGP races without a Honda rider on the podium was at the Catalan Grand Prix and the Dutch TT in 2009.

Moto2 stats and facts

• The five Moto2 races that have taken place at the Catalunya circuit have resulted in five different winners: 2010 – Yuki Takahashi, 2011 – Stefan Bradl, 2012 – Andrea Iannone, 2013 – Pol Espargaro, 2014 – Tito Rabat.
• In addition to Rabat in the Moto2 class last year, the only other GP winners currently competing full time in the Moto2 class who have won previously at Catalunya (both in the Moto3 class) are Luis Salom in 2013 and Alex Marquez in 2014.
• Johan Zarco finished third last year in the Moto2 race in Catalunya – his first podium finish at the circuit. Zarco was also the first rider to cross the finishing line in the 125cc race in 2011, but was given a 20 second penalty for an illegal passing move that demoted him to sixth. Zarco has been on the podium at the last five races; he is the first French rider to finish on the podium in five or more successive intermediate-class grand prix races since Olivier Jacque had nine successive podium finishes in 2000 on his way to winning the 250cc world title.

• Tito Rabat has finished on the podium for the last two years at the Catalan GP: he qualified on pole and won the race last year, and he finished second in 2013, just 0.081 seconds behind Pol Espargaro after a race long battle. Rabat’s victory at Mugello was his first win since the San Marino Grand Prix last year and the first win by a reigning world champion in the intermediate-class since Marco Simoncelli won the 250cc race at Philip Island in 2009.
• Tom Luthi took his first ever GP podium finish at the Catalunya circuit, second in the 125cc class in 2003. He has finished on the podium three times in the Moto2 class in Catalunya: second in 2010 and 2012 and third in 2013. Last year he was fifth in Catalunya after losing two places on the final lap. Luthi’s crash at Mugello was the first time that he had failed to score points since he crashed in Indianapolis last year.
• Alex Rins’ second place finish in the Moto3 race two years ago is the only occasion he has completed a GP race at the Catalunya circuit.
• Dominique Aegerters’s third place finish at Mugello was his first podium finish since he was third in Indianapolis last year.
• Mika Kallio has had one podium finish from his thirteen starts across the three GP class at Catalunya – third in the 125cc race in 2005. He finished 4th in the Moto2 race in Catalunya last year, which is his best result in the class at this circuit.
• Moto2 rookie Jesko Raffin celebrates his 19th birthday on the first day of practice at the Catalunya Grand Prix.
• Azlan Shah finished 15th at the Italian GP to score his first grand prix point. He is only the third rider from Malaysia to score points in the intermediate-class of grand prix racing, along with current Moto2 rider Hafizh Syahrin, and Shahrol Yuzy who competed in the 250cc class between 2000 and 2002.

Moto3 stats and facts

• None of the riders currently competing in the Moto3 class has had a grand prix victory at the Catalunya circuit.
• There has not been a Spanish win in the Moto3 class since Efren Vazquez won in Malaysia last year. This is the longest sequence of lightweight-class GP races without a Spanish winner since the final four races of 2008 together with the first three races of 2009.
• Spanish riders have won the lightweight-class grand prix at the Catalunya circuit for the last five years; the last non-Spanish winner was Andrea Iannone in 2009.
• For the last five years, the rider who has won the lightweight-class grand prix in Catalunya has started from pole position.
• The best GP result for championship leader Danny Kent at the Catalunya circuit is 11th in the 125cc race in 2011. Since taking the lead in the championship standings with a win in Austin, Kent has increased his lead in the championship at each of the following races.

• Enea Bastianini’s second place finish last year at the Catalan GP was his first grand prix podium, in just his seventh GP start. He also qualified in second place on the grid last year in Catalunya – his only front row start so far in GP racing.
• Efren Vazquez finished third last year at the Catalan GP – his first GP podium finish at the circuit.
