Supermoto in Newcastle this weekend
At least three new champions will be crowned this weekend when the 2015 Watson Demolition and Earthworks Australian Supermoto Championships are staged along the Foreshore of Newcastle Harbour.
The currently injured Troy Bayliss won both the S2 and S3 classes last year while the S1 champion Beau Laing is entered only for the S2 class this weekend.
One of the few competitors contesting both the S2 and S3 classes is English rider Chris Hodgson who will be out to emulate Bayliss’ feat.
Besides Laing, Hodgson is expected to face his toughest opposition in the S2 class from countryman Lewis Cornishman, who was placed second in 2013, other former placegetters Warren Gill and Andy McLeish and some of Australia’s very best dirt trackers in Luke Richards, Paul Caslick and Matthew Davies.
In the S1 class last year’s place-getters Aaron Watson and Ross Taylor, the latter a former champion, will be out to go one better.
A smaller line-up for the S3 will provide some interesting competition as Chris Hodgson takes on the likes of Matthew Davies, last year’s Junior champion Kye Thomson and Tayla Jones, who will also be defending her Women’s crown.
On-track action both Saturday and Sunday starts at 10am going through to 4.30pm, with Saturday featuring practice, qualifying and one round before the remaining three rounds are staged on Sunday.
Time permitting, a non-championship 10-lap Dash for Cash for the 24 fastest riders across all senior classes will wrap up proceedings on Sunday.
While the road along the harbour foreshore will make up much of the track the dirt section will be constructed in parkland just over the road from the waterway which will give fans the opportunity for fans to get up close as the riders take on the unique layout.
Remember, general admissions is free so take your fold-up chairs!
