ASBK Winton Finale
Live Video Feed – Preview – Warm Up Results
After a week of cataclysmic weather across much of Victoria the heavens cleared for competitors contesting today’s final round of the 2016 Yamaha Motor Insurance sponsored ASBK Championship.
Not a cloud could be seen anywhere on the horizon as warm up sessions got underway just before 0900 this morning with an ambient temperature sitting on a quite pleasant 12-degrees on the way to a forecast 22-degree maximum later this afternoon.
Forecasts are still predicting rain, but most climatic soothsayers foresee that the precipitation will not arrive until later this evening. Thus our full race day should be dry, although an afternoon shower is still not out of the question and might tip the form guide upside down.
On current form it looks as though Troy Herfoss might be untouchable here today. His main rivals in this final two battles for the war that is the 2016 ASBK Championship, Wayne Maxwell and Glenn Allerton, sensationally failed to make the top six in QP2 yesterday. This certainly took some of the pressure off Troy Herfoss, and the Crankt Protein Honda man went on to claim the single championship point awarded for pole position on a dry track yesterday afternoon at Winton Motor Raceway.
That single point could make all the difference when the 2016 YMI ASBK Champion is crowned this afternoon, following today’s final 2 x 17 lap races of the six-round 2016 ASBK Championship.
In fact, a single point is exactly what it came down to last year, when Maxwell and Herfoss went head-to-head in the rival Swann Superbike Championship, with Herfoss the victor. Maxwell was untouchable here at Winton last year, in the Swann Series, but this time around the form is looking very different, with Herfoss and Team Honda at the top of their game at the point of the season where it really counts.
On qualifying form Josh Waters will also be strong today, as will 2015 ASBK Champion Mike Jones.
Morning warm-up however has told a different story, with a Yamaha Racing Team 1-2-3, and in fact Yamaha machinery filled the top five places in morning warm-up ahead of Herfoss.
