Australian Superbike competitors got away for their second and final bout of the World Superbike weekend at Phillip Island in almost perfect conditions.
Race one winner Josh Hook again led the Honda triumvirate through the opening turns at Phillip Island, where a good number of the 56,515 three-day crowd had hung around to watch after the running of the second World Superbike race.
Jamie Stauffer had hit the lead towards the end of the opening lap and Hook had the power down hard between turns 11 and 12 to try and chase down the elder statesman of Team Honda but lost the rear of the new CBR 1000 RR SP. Wayne Maxwell was right behind Hook and had nowhere to go; running over the tumbling carnage of the Hook incident. An absolutely horrific scene but both riders walked away, seemingly without any major injury. Still, going to be a busy time in the Motologic workshop this week…
With his teammates watching on from the sidelines Jamie Stauffer had an easy cruise to victory well ahead of a hectic battle for second place waged between Mike Jones and Sean Condon, the former of that Kawasaki pair scoring the second placed gong.
Jamie Stauffer leads the Phillip Island Championship on 45 points ahead of Mike Jones on 38 points. The final two bouts of the inaugural Phillip Island Championship will be completed at the MotoGP World Championship event in October.
Unfortunately, we found out after the race that Josh Hook is suffering from a broken collarbone and wrist; while Wayne Maxwell has dislocated his shoulder. The highs and lows of motorcycle racing….
