Australia’s most popular motorcycle models by segment

In our brand sales overview we detailed the market share and sales growth of all the major motorcycle brands, while in this feature we showcase the top ten selling motorcycles overall, and also broken down into the individual market segments.

The biggest selling motorcycle in Australia is Honda’s NBC110. What the hell is an NBC110 you ask? It is of course the venerable red rocket utilised by Australia Post.

Yamaha’s WR450F was the biggest selling motorcycle available to the Australian general public ahead of Kawasaki’s Ninja 300, Honda’s CRF50F and Harley-Davidson’s Street 500. Four of that quintet, take the off-road only CRF50F out of the equation, and the remaining four also make up the biggest selling road bikes, and the biggest selling Learner Approved Motorcycles.

So a few division wins there for Yamaha’s WR450F, which also predictably took out the crown of biggest selling enduro. It’s YZ450F sibling took the mantle of biggest selling motocross machine.

In the official figures Honda’s CBR500F and CBR300R are classified as Supersport models… But take those LAMS machines out of the Supersport figures and the top selling sportsbike was Ducati’s new 959 Panigale. The 959 must have robbed plenty of sales from its big brother 1299 Panigale however as sales for the big banger dropped from 88 to 31, compared to the same period last year.

The biggest selling Japanese sportsbike was Kawasaki’s ZX-10R, just nudging out Honda’s perennial favourite CBR1000RR Fireblade from top spot in that fight. 146 sales to ZX-10R and 142 to the Fireblade. Overall though, it has to be said, sportsbike sales continue to be woeful.

Honda’s CRF1000L Africa Twin made a stellar debut to smash the adventure-touring segment by a handy margin. And that’s with Honda not being able to go anywhere close to meeting demand for the model due to natural disasters in Japan halting production of the machine for a number of months.
