Craig Jones passes away from injuries sustained in sickening high speed crash at Brands Hatch
By Trevor Hedge
British rider Craig Jones has succumbed to the massive head injuries he sustained during a high speed fall during the Brands Hatch World Supersport round in Kent.
Jones was battling for the lead at high speed before losing traction exiting the fast Clarke Curve. Jones fell heavily and then was struck by another machine following close behind. The following rider, Andrew Pitt, was left with no time to even consider taking evasive action, let alone the chance of successfully performing such a manoeuvre.
Jones received immediate medical attention at the scene and was put in a drug induced coma prior to being air-lifted to Royal London Hospital. Despite the best care Jones unfortunately failed to recover from his injuries and passed away in hospital at 0032 on Monday morning, August 4.
Our best wishes go out to the Jones family and the Parkalgar Honda race team headed by Simon Buckmaster. Also to the whole World Superbike paddock where Craig was a popular figure and will be sorely missed by all.
I first met Craig personally during a test session at Phillip Island back in January 2006 when he was preparing to enter the 2006 World Superbike Championship with Team Foggy Petronas.
I sat down and talked at length with the youngster and was immediately struck by his obvious enthusiasm for racing and his almost encyclopaedic knowledge of motorcycle racing across many eras.
I recorded some of our conversation and present it here to give you a better insight into Craig. I am sure you will agree that his passion for racing is clearly evident and his enthusiasm infectious.
