A huge field of fifty Moto 3 riders battled for fourty six places on the grid in round five of the CEV Repsol this weekend. After combining two qualifying sessions of two separate groups, Remy Gardner secured eleventh position on the starting grid for today’s two races at Catalunya Circuit.
Finishing a credible tenth place after an intense battle in race one and fourteenth in race two, Remy secured an additional eight points in the Championship tally.
Race one started well for Remy, and although he aimed to stick with the first four he was unable to pull away from a large group of eleven highly competitive riders. It became clear after the first half of the race this group would all be fighting hard to secure fifth place, and Remy did well to lead the group for many of the sixteen laps. But, every one of those riders wanted the points and there was constant overtaking and re-taking throughout the pack. On the second last lap Remy was pushed wide and had to fight hard to comeback from thirteenth, to finally finish in tenth.
Remy didn’t get a great start into the first corner of race two, and held his start position for some time. He unfortunately lost momentum during the race, and after finally pulling away from the third leading group of the field he was able to finish race two in fourteenth position.
“This was really demanding racing today,” said Remy. “In both races we had competitive riders scattered all over the field. It was great experience for me battling so hard in the first race, and although I was very disappointed to have finished in tenth after almost tasting fifth, I need to look back at the race now and see where I went wrong to make sure I don’t repeat the same mistakes. Race two was a real disappointment for me. I was fighting hard to get back up to the lead group, but just didn’t pull it off in the end. I’m testing in Albacete next week and getting ready for the next race there in a few weeks. I hope I can put together everything I learned this weekend to improve my results,” he added.
Winner of both races, Fabio Quartararo (France) did an incredible job to increase his strong lead in the championship, with Jorge Navarro (Spain) in second; and Hiroki Ono (Japan) third in race one; and Ono in second and Navarro in third in race two.
Remy currently sits equal thirteenth in the CEV Repsol Championship.
