Gillman Speedway Stadium confirmed to host 2016 FIM Speedway Sidecar 1000cc World Cup
Gillman Speedway Stadium will host the 2016 FIM Speedway Sidecar 1000cc World Cup.
The event, which will be held on Saturday March 26, 2016, will see the world’s best Speedway Sidecar riders head to South Australia to compete for the ultimate glory in their discipline.
MA Speedway Commission Chairman Ivan Golding said the excitement was building ahead of the much-anticipated event.
“We’re very much looking forward to seeing the 2016 FIM Speedway Sidecar 1000cc World Cup take place at Gillman Speedway Stadium, and it is sure to be a fantastic event for competitors and spectators alike,” Golding said.
“It will be great to see a truly world class event such as this being held in Australia at a high quality venue.”
Teams from the United States, United Kingdom, New Zealand and of course Australia will take part at the event, with the top four riders from each nation competing for the coveted World Cup title.
Gillman Speedway Stadium Manager Dave Parker said the venue was rapt to secure the right to host the event, which along with the opening round of the 2016 Oceanic Sidecar Championship on March 27 will provide the venue with a true international double-header over the Easter weekend.
“This has been a huge effort by a lot of people,” Parker said.
“Ivan Golding, Armando Castagna (FIM CCP Chairman), Leigh Adams and Mark Lemon have all done their part in making this World Cup meeting a reality.”
Parker added that the decision to return Speedway Sidecar racing’s premier event to the traditional Speedway format would be another exciting addition to the 2016 program.
“This event has been run in the past under the ‘Track’ rules and regulations,” Parker said.
“There were no B or A finals and all sorts of weird tracks that the Speedway guys had to run on.
“Now it is back to Speedway not Track, so you will see it all unfold as it should with the 16 rider, 20 heat format, and B and A Finals on real Speedway tracks.”
