This week Greg Moss speaks with 18yr old Hayden Mellross. Hayden is young enough to be riding in the U\19 development class but instead is riding in the premier MX1 class and constantly running top 10, ahead of a lot of very experienced riders. Greg has known Hayden since his 50cc days and he did most his junior riding on the Moss Institute Team before heading off to the USA for a while, and looks to be back and stamping a future.
Q: How did you feel coming into your rookie season of the Monster Energy MX Nationals?
A: I felt confident and relaxed coming into the mx season. It was the first time in a few years I haven’t been carrying an injury. I was really looking forward to going out there and having great races along side Australia’s best.
Q: Did you have any expectations?
A: I didn’t have many expectations due to the fact I haven’t raced with many of my competitors before. I was looking to get some solid finishes under my belt and progress through out the season.
Q: How do you like racing in Australia compared to America?
A: I really love racing at home in Australia, because my family is here and they support me at almost every race. I enjoy riding on the Australian tracks, however I prefer the style of American tracks in the way that they flow and how they prep them.
Q: Do you prefer to train alone or with other riders?
A: I prefer to train with other riders because it allows me to be more aggressive, form more ruts, and make the track rough. I enjoy the company and pressure that other riders give me.
Q: What are your goals for the MX/SX season?
A: My goals for 2014 mx would be to stay consistent with my finishes and achieve a top 5 overall. I feel more confident in racing super cross this year. With all my injuries last season my goals are to stay healthy and finish with an overall in the top three.
