Jamie Stauffer takes race two at Mallala
Troy Herfoss led Jamie Stauffer and race one victor Wayne Maxwell through turn one as the second of today’s three Superbike bouts got underway at 1334 this afternoon at Mallala Motorsports Park. By the time they crossed the stripe to signal the end of the first flying lap that order had shuffled with Jamie Stauffer leading the race from Wayne Maxwell, Cru Halliday and Troy Herfoss in fourth.
Jamie continued to lead on lap three and it looked as though his aggression had returned, the Fireblade monoing on change of direction after the Northern Hairpin. Another rider full of aggression was Glenn Allerton, the Yamaha rider putting a forceful move on Herfoss into the esses to stake his claim on fourth place.
Cru Halliday looked to be reinvigorated for this second stanza and was all over the back of Wayne Maxwell throughout the opening laps. The fastest man on lap five was Sean Condon, the Kawasaki rider sneaked in a 67.22 to close on Ben Burke and Mike Jones, that Kawasaki trio looking set to tussle over sixth place honours.
Herfoss and Halliday touched into the esses with a little over five laps to run, Herfoss the aggressor and also the rider to come out on top after pushing his Fireblade up the inside of the YZF-R1M. Halliday did not lose much time in the move but it appeared as though it had shook his concentration a little and he fell back into the clutches of the Kawasaki men and out of the battle for a podium finish. Talking to Halliday after the race his explanation for his lack of late pace due to severe arm pump, the 26-year-old simply struggling to hold onto the Superbike.
Glenn Allerton had got the better of Maxwell for second place but it was still Jamie Stauffer holding sway at the front of the field. Troy Herfoss had put in a new fastest lap of the race after dispensing with Halliday, and with three laps to run was all over the back of Maxwell. Herfoss the only man to dip into the 66s during this second stanza.
Herfoss got Maxwell with 2.5 laps to run, his next target Allerton. Nothing separated the leading quartet with two laps to run however.
Herfoss pulled alongside Maxwell as they got the last lap board but could not make a move into turn one… He did it shortly afterwards though to take second place.
On the penultimate lap Allerton shoved the YZF-R1M up the inside of Herfoss, forcing his way past and with the Honda man being hung out to dry on the outside, Maxwell also took his opportunity to sneak through and pushed Herfoss further back to fourth.
It was all still to play for on the final lap, Allerton nearly swapping ends as he got the power down out of the left-hander after the Northern Hairpin. He stayed on the gas however, as did Maxwell, and the defending champion mugged Allerton on the final turn to take second place. All those shenanigans had allowed Jamie Stauffer to shake his pursuers off and the Kurri Kurri rider celebrated his race victory with a very satisfied fist pump after crossing the line.
The final result Jamie Stauffer the victor by 1.4-seconds over Maxwell with Allerton rounding out the podium ahead of a frustrated Troy Herfoss.
Jamie Stauffer – P1 – Not rode for 2.5 months until the test last week so I am feeling better each time I get out there. My pelvis is not holding me back, but due to being on blood thinners I could not train too hard so I am struggling for fitness a little but that will come. At the start of this year I felt I was riding the best I have ever had in my life but that crash at Phillip Island of course was a huge setback but I am out to make amends for that here.”
Glenn Allerton – P3 – “Been a while since I have been up here on the podium, the boys worked really hard on the bike between the races so a big thanks to them for getting it turned around so quickly.”
Supersport
Michael Blair took a narrow victory over local rider Jay Presepio in the second of today’s three Supersport bouts at Mallala Motorsports Park this afternoon. Callum Spriggs took a strong third place in the re-started race while Brayden Elliott claimed fourth, the leading quartet covered by only a single second after the nine-lap race distance. Race one podium finisher Troy Guenther had a coming together with another rider and failed to finish.
FX Pro Twins / Nakedbike / Formula Xtreme C&D Race Two
James Arnold once again dominated the combined FX Pro Twins / Nakedbike / Formula Xtreme C&D Race this afternoon at Mallala Motorsports Park. His race two victory on the Ducati 1199 Panigale a clear 10.5-second affair over Paul Dutton after the eight lap race distance.
