Smarty’s Moto Wrap for Aug 12, 2014
Â
The 450 class in the AMA Motocross Championship is continuing to be a ding-dong battle between the KTM duo of Ken Roczen and Ryan Dungey. Dungey dug deep to take another overall victory at Unadilla on the weekend and thanks to the Honda duo of Trey Canard and Eli Tomac running up front Roczen’s points lead has dwindled to just seven points with two rounds remaining.
After what can only be put down as a disastrous couple of years with injuries you have to take your hot off to Trey Canard who took his first moto win for quite some time at Unadilla. See the full 450 and 250 report and points below.
James Stewart didn’t turn up again for whatever reason while Chad Reed has brought his good mate Michael Byrne into the Two Two Motorsport team for remaining rounds of the AMA championships. Reed injured his shoulder during the opening 450 moto at Unadilla and is in doubt for the remaining rounds while Byrne rode to a solid top 20 in the opening moto and was in a good position early in the second moto until his header pipe needed replacing. Great to see Byrne back racing again.
The future of motocross here in Australia is looking strong with yet another Aussie taking a World Junior Motocross Championship thanks to the speed of young Jett Lawrence on his KTM65. Jett convincingly beat the best 65cc riders in the world in the opening moto then backed that up with a smart second place in moto two to take the win while former World 65cc Motocross Champion Caleb Grothues won the opening 85cc final but was unlucky to be hampered by a mud infested second moto to finish a very close second place in the championship. Onya boys, full results below.
The 2014 Conondale Classic was a dead set cracker with several young Pro riders turning up to give the established stars a run for their money but it was multi Australian Motocross and Supercross Champion Glen Bell who manage to take the Pro class win. See the full results below.
Team Belgium for the 2014 Motocross of Nations in Latvia is Jeremy Van Horebeek (MX1), Kevin Strijbos (Open) and Julien Lieber (MX2) while Team USA will be Ryan Dungey, Eli Tomac and Jeremy Martin.
The United States last won the Motocross of Nations way back in 2011 when the event was held in Saint D’Angely, France so they are hungry to regain the top spot on the podium.

2014 Lucas Oils Pro Motocross Championship – Round 10 – Unadilla
1996 World 500cc Motocross Champion Shayne King and I rushed home from the Conondale Classic on Sunday and after un-packing our gear we sat down to watch the Unadilla round of the AMA Motocross Championship on Youtube and like me King is absolutely amazed with the pace of the current crop of AMA riders.
Unadilla is one of the most challenging tracks on the circuit with high speeds, huge jumps and super deep ruts yet the top riders in each class are riding around at warp speed all moto.
Ryan Dungey really had to knuckle down to win the opening moto ahead of championship leader Ken Roczen and early in the second moto Roczen blew by Dungey as they battled with the fast starting Justin Brayton and Phil Nicoletti but Dungey instantly put a pass back on Roczen and then managed to work his way up to second place behind Trey Canard to gain more points on Roczen.
With two rounds and four races to go this is going to be a sensational battle between Roczen and Dungey while Trey Canard and Eli Tomac simply want to put their Honda’s on the top of the podium and don’t give a crap about the championship. Hang on to your hat folks.
Jeremy Martin is now 66 points in front in the 250 class after another solid showing at Unadilla but it was the former World Motocross Champion Christophe Pourcel who managed his first overall for the year with 1-2 results over Martin’s 3-1.
Cooper Webb lost his second placing in the series to Blake Baggett after his Yamaha failed him for the first time this year in the second moto.

2014 Conondale Classic – Green Park, Conondale
When 1996 World Motocross Champion Shayne King and his brother Darryll turned up to take on Australia’s best classic motocross riders they didn’t expect to have to take on teenage Pro riders to garner a race or championship wins but that is exactly what went down at the Conondale Classic last weekend.
Young guns Damian Harrison, Adam Martin and Callum Wastell joined the established Aussie stars in Glen Bell, Brad Van Barello, Steven Frieberg, Justin Rooney and Matthew Roeder to take on the international contingent and in doing so created some of the best racing in the history of this iconic event.
Bell managed to hang on to win the Pro Class and the 500cc Pre 90 classes while a gaggle of yesteryear heroes put themselves in the fray to post solid podium results ahead of a full field of competitors. This truly is the premier Classic Motocross event on the race calendar.
