Mackenzie and Ward Claim Maiden 2014 MX National Round Wins At Wanneroo
CDR Yamaha’s Billy Mackenzie has broken through for his maiden Overall round win at the fifth round of the 2014 Monster Energy MX Nationals held at Wanneroo in Western Australian on Sunday the 25th of May.
Mackenzie did not have everything go to plan however, missing out on superpole in the morning by one positionm, qualifying 6th fastest.
The Scotsman more than made up for it in the opening moto taking the holeshot before going on to win, though he did have things go his way, when Championship leader Matt Moss crashed a couple of laps after taking the lead away from Mackenzie, handing the Yamaha rider the lead back.
In the second moto Mackenzie again claimed the holeshot, before settling into second position behind Jake Moss, with the two riders clearing out from the field.
Jake Moss held on for the win with Mackenzie in second.
Mackenzie just missed out on a hat trick of hole shots, rounding the first turn on the back wheel of Jake Moss.
Jake Moss cleared out for a comfortable win, while Mackenzie locked himself in a three-rider battle along with Matt Moss and Kirk Gibbs.
Unfortunately for Mackenzie we crashed hard in the final lap while attempting to pass Gibbs for third. However he was able to quickly remount his bike and race through for 4th behind Jake Moss, Matt Moss and Gibbs.
His 1-2-4 results on the day were enough for him to claim his maiden round win for the year in the MX1 class.
“The win does not feel much different than all the other races,” Mackenzie stated after his first round win for the year, “I guess it will sink in tomorrow when I look back at the pictures and stuff.
“I had a strong day, the bike got me out of the gate, which helped me a lot, I got two hole shots and almost a third so that was a positive and really helped.”
Heading into the round with food poisoning and spending all morning in the hands of Racesafe in order to race for the weekend, Motul Suzuki’s Matt Moss not for the first time this season finished off the top step of the podium in second place.
However he was still able to walk away from the round increasing his championship lead over the entire field thanks to his 3rd place result in superpole.
“”I have never been happier to walk away from a round now winning but opening up the points lead!” Moss exclaimed.
“I was struggling, I was up spewing in the toilet all night, I probably only got 20 minutes sleep all night.
“Racesafe definitely looked after me this weekend and got me to a point where I was able to race.”
Rounding out the podium was Matt’s twin brother Jake Moss riding for the NPS Monster Energy Kawasaki team who got the day off to the best possible start, picking up five championship points on the back of his superpole win.
The first race did not go quite as well for Jake Moss as he was left to lament his a mid race crash that left him just missing out on the overall round win after he stormed through to win the final two moto’s.
“I raced well today, just my first race let me down with a couple of rookie mistakes that I should not have made. “ Moss stated.
“I am happy, I kind of dominated the last two which was good for me and my NPS Monster Energy Kawasaki team.”
KTM Motocross Racing’s Kirk Gibbs finished the day in fourth overall on the back of another rock solid and consistent round and heads into the mid season break second In the championship standings.
NPS Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Adam Monea fought back hard in the final moto of the day after an early crash to finish 8th in the moto and 5th overall for the round.
Suzuki privateer Jacob Wright finished the day in 6th, one point ahead of Penrite Oil Honda MX’s Ben Townley who after racing to third place in the opening mot finished a little further down the field in the final two motos of the day.
DPH Yamaha’s Sam Martin finished in 8th place overall just one point behind Townley though scored the same amount of points for the round due to his 5th place in Superpole.
Raceline backed Suzuki rider Hayden Mellross finished 9th while CDR Yamaha’s Jay Marmont rounded out the top ten.
The hard luck story of the day in the MX1 class went to Kade Mosig. After two good results in the opening two moto’s the DPH Yamaha rider was inline for another top five overall result and a chance at an overall podium.
However he suffered and electrical problem at the start of the sight lap for the final moto, leaving him to watch the final race from the sidelines.
In the MX2 class the day belonged to North Queensland’s KTM Privateer Caleb Ward.
Fresh off the back of his 2nd place final moto results at the previous round at Murray Bridge, Ward had a day he will never forget at Wanneroo firing himself to opening two moto wins for the day and a third place in the final moto to taking a dominating maiden MX2 round victory.
The quietly spoken 17 year old could not have been any happier with his result on the day going 1-1-3 for the win and in the process moved himself into championship contention as the MX2 front runners heading into the round struggled in the Wanneroo sand.
“I am pretty happy right now, it has been a pretty good day, I just tried to ride really smooth and consistent and to get the overall is sweet.” Ward said at the end of the day.
“I rode pretty tight in the last one, there were people going everywhere and I just knew I had to ride consistent and stay away from everyone and the track was getting pretty rough. It was intense out there. But it was a good day and I had fun.”
Finishing second for the round was SD3 Husqvarna’s Luke Arbon. Arbon backed up his win at his home race in South Australia last weekend with a 4-5-1 result for the round and could not be happier to be back on the podium for the second round running.
Arbon now sits 4th in the championship standings just 34 points behind championship leader Luke Clout
“I knew I would have made a lot of points today, most of the top runners had inconsistent days and my day was not to bad compared to theirs. “ Arbon explained.
“I am pumped for the last half of the season, I know I have what it takes to win this thing, but I am not going to think about that yet.”
Rounding out the podium was Penrite Oil, Honda MX Teams Josh Cachia who is quickly finding his form after nearly 12 months away from racing.
After bike issues in the opening race that left him to finish in 9th place, Cachia finished the day off with a 4th and 2nd place results in the final two moto’s to land on the box.
“It feels amazing to be back on the podium in just my third race back.” Cachia admitted.
“From getting 17th and 19ths to qualifying 13th then moving into the top ten with a 9th in the first moto today, then a 4th then a 2nd in the last race, that is progression.”
Serco Yamaha’s Jay Wilson finished the day fourth overall after qualifying fastest aboard his YZ250F in the morning. New Zealand’s Hamish Harwood rounded out the top five and in the process moved to second in the MX2 championship just ten points behind Clout.
For Clout Wanneroo proved to be a tough event, finishing the day down in 8th position after some heavy crashed in the second moto.
“The track was really gnarly, I have never been here before, all the rumors of people saying how crazy the track is you can’t really tell yourself until your actually ride it.
The track was insane.” Clout stated.
Another rider having a day he would rather forget was Husqvarna mounted Kayne Lamont.
Lamont came into the round second in the championship standings, but left in 5th place after a horrible day in the sand.
A big crash in the second moto left him with a suspected dislocated shoulder. He was able to finish the final two moto’s however and pick up some valuable points heading into the mid season break.
KTM privateer Brenden Harrison who is still suffering from some early season injuries heads into the break third in points after finishing 10th overall at Wanneroo.
The 2014 Monster Energy MX Nationals will resume on the 29th of June as Swan Hill in Victoria.
