Nicky Hayden collected by car in Italy while cycling – Taken to ICU with brain and chest trauma
2006 MotoGP World Champion and current Red Bull Honda World Superbike Team rider Nicky Hayden has been treated in the Intensive Care Unit after a car crashed into the 35-year-old while he was cycling in Italy.
This is a very serious accident for the popular Kentucky Kid, one look at the windscreen and the crumpled roof of the car that collected him is enough to give some idea of the brunt of the impact.
Doctors have reported overnight that Hayden has suffered a ‘diffuse brain edema’, other reports suggest there has also been some chest trauma.
In layman’s terms, the ‘diffuse brain edema’ terminoloy presents a condition generally referred to as fluid on the brain.
The term ‘polytrauma’, in the Italian newspaper report essentially means multiple trauma, polytrauma is a medical term describing the condition of a person who has been subjected to multiple traumatic injuries. Such as the reported head and chest injuries Hayden sustained in the accident.
Best wishes to Hayden and his family for a speedy recovery.
MCNews.com.au has interviewed Hayden many times over the year, the most recent chat was around 18 months ago, when Hayden announced his move to WorldSBK with Honda (Link). In that interview we spoke about some of his previous rivalries, including that with Casey Stoner and Troy Bayliss.
