Round two of the Australasian Superbike Championship has begun at Mallala Motorsport Park and #27 Jamie Stauffer has stormed to Pole position for tomorrow’s races.
The AFX-Superbike event to be held tomorrow forms the precursor to Sunday’s Swann Insurance Australasian Superbike Championship and Stauffer’s Pole position shows that the Round 1 overall victor is looking to continue his winning form.
Stauffer recorded a fastest lap time of 1:06.922 sec, “Today went really well for us. We had some solid practice sessions and a Qualifying session in the afternoon which has placed me on Pole for the races tomorrow. The Honda CBR1000RR SP that the team has provided is great to ride and I was able to record strong lap times early in the session. I know we will be strong tomorrow with some minor changes to the bike tonight.”
Bikebiz / Ipone / Kawaskai rider Sean Condon recorded the second fastest time at Mallala today on his first race meeting at the South Australian circuit, his 67.40 a full half second slower than pacesetter Stauffer. Robbie Bugden pushed the YRT Yamaha YZF-R1 to third fastest with a 67.549 on the eighth of his ten lap stint in the second session.
Team Honda’s Wayne Maxwell recorded the 4th fastest time in Qualifying despite a late tumble at the final turn, a 1:07.580 sec onboard the Motul Honda CBR1000RR SP.
Maxwell will round out the front row for tomorrow’s races with #16 Josh Hook to start from P5 on the grid with a fastest qualifying lap today of 67.596 ahead of Cru Halliday, who also crashed and heavily damaged his YRT R1. Mike Jones was next best on the Crazy Dogs Kawasaki, 67.815 his marker.
Team Honda’s new encumbent Troy Herfoss, the newest recruit to Team Honda Racing will start from P8 on the grid tomorrow. Glenn Scott and Rick Olson rounded out the top ten.
Mallala lap record holder Glenn Allerton had a knee reconstruction only two weeks ago and struggled throughout the session to a best of 69.33 from his six laps. A far cry from his 2008 lap record 65.773.
