Before the start of qualifying I had joked with the team that I could become the first to win a watch as the pole starter in both the World and British series! This is important for us as we improve every round, the bike is getting better in every session and we are working hard. I enjoying the bike and finally we are getting something back, now I hope for the same in the races!”

Brookes said: “Today has not been completely perfect, but it has gone fairly well really – we are at the top of the times. In the first session we started on the SC1 tyre as I normally use that one for the race and only use the SC0 on the odd occasion. But with the temperature being as hot as it was today it was the ideal environment for the SC0, so for the second session we made some more changes and we were able to do consistent and good lap times. It wasn’t perfect as I said before, but I am fairly satisfied with how we have ended today with a really good, consistent run and the fastest time.”

Brookes had fired to the front of the field on the opening lap from Byrne and Bridewell, with Byrne soon back ahead and the pair swapped positions for the lead before the Rapid Solicitors Kawasaki rider held the advantage. His Australian rival though was determined and made a move at Murrays a few laps later to regain the position with Bridewell and Ellison in close contention.

For me, the session was all about making sure that I was in the top three to take a front row start and I had a goal of the lap I wanted to set. But when I saw the time come up, I was really, really happy. We had made some changes to the bike and they really worked, but now we have two long races here and that is what it is all about.”
