An uplifting story of survival and a motorcyclists desire to give something back
MCNEWS.COM.AU forum member Sasha Maggiolo was involved in a motorcycle accident in May last year. Numerous broken bones and internal damage left her in dire peril and doctors gave her family the startling news that Sasha had only a 1% chance of surviving the first 24 hours.
Over the course of the following weeks Sasha underwent numerous operations and went through hundreds of units of blood. Sasha actually went on to hold the dubious honour of using the most blood, blood products and platelets in the history of Royal Brisbane Hospital, Queensland’s largest and busiest hospital. In all Sasha spent over 100 days in Intensive Care.
Sasha puts her survival down to the vast knowledge and on-going research conducted by Professor Lipman and his dedicated team of doctors, Dr Holley, Dr Boots, Dr Finch and many others. And Sasha makes an extra special mention of the wonderful and incredible care of those normally unsung heroes, the nurses.
Sasha is now back up and running at full steam and since recovering has made it her mission to help raise funds and from here I will let her take up the story.
“The RBWH emergency and intensive care units are considered to be one of the best in the world, and as a direct result of receiving funding from the community for advanced research projects RBWH saves hundreds of lives, like mine.
“Research is not Government funded and relies on the commitment of corporate and community groups to drive the patient treatment breakthroughs that hold the key to the future.
“On Sunday 21st of September 2008, I am holding a fundraising event at Dell Ugo’s Restaurant, New Farm.
“This will financially assist the nurses with training that is vital for the advancement of their skills in critical care, trauma and burns at the RBWH.
“I would like to take the opportunity to extend an invitation to you to join us for the fundraising event at Dell Ugo’s Restaurant in New Farm.”
